Re: “Raoul's Velvet Room - CLOSED

Several of you saw my "hat incident" postings on Twitter last night and have inquired about what happened at Fuel/Raoul's Velvet Room so I've decided to lay it out here in this blog. And yes, I'll admit it isn't the snazziest hat, but as you'll see, that's kind of beside the point. First of all, I want to be clear that the staff at Fuel/RVR were all reasonably professional except for the manager on duty who obviously didn't know the first thing about the hospitality industry, which is simply to be polite to your guests. I wasn't even given the obvious option of just taking off my hat; instead, I was flatly told that I had to leave immediately. Of course this was after my group and I had spent a C-note or more on cover charges and drinks during the three hours we had been there. I was utterly shocked at the manager's rudeness but decided it was time to leave anyway so I headed toward the restroom area as my ride had gone in there a few moments earlier. At that time I was approached again and told once more that I had to leave, this time by the same manager along with another employee who (guess what?) was wearing a hat conspicuously similar to mine. I explained to them that I was waiting for my ride to get out of the restroom and had no intentions of staying any longer as I was obviously not welcome there. Apparently I was not believed, and my audacity at pointing out to the manager that the other employee was wearing a hat didn't sit too well with him, as was evidenced by his continued rudeness. Once my ride emerged from the restroom she too was absolutely shocked at what was happening, so we left, along with the others in my group. What confounds me is why Fuel/RVR did not enforce their dress code at the door before taking people's money or at least explain to guests upon arrival that there are different dress codes even though the two bars had a common entry point and a single cover charge. And just why is it that the dress code doesn't seem to apply to their own employees? Fuel/RVR's management created an unnecessarily ugly situation that resulted in several extremely dissatisfied guests solely due to their own ineptness and unprofessionalism. Needless to say, we won't be back.

Re: “The Cashew

***WARNING!!!! ***TAKE YOUR PRIVATE PARTIES ELSEWHERE! PATHETIC VENUE! Perhaps if you're simply drunk & have never partied in better than a barn you might love this hole. WHEN IN REALITY... There is NO Airconditioning in the upper floor ballrooms. They say & sell that there is, but it does not function, NEVER HAS! It was 98 degrees on June 27th when they screwed hundreds of clients over with the lies & BS! There was a crew of HVAC techs kicked out about 2 hours before guests arrived so they were not caught afro-engineering some laughing stock of a AC system that very afternoon. THIS VENUE HAS BEEN OPEN FOR MONTHS IF NOT YEARS DOING THIS TO EVENT AFTER EVENT OVER & OVER!!!! THE LIES MUST STOP!!!! The Video system FAILED when the clients group was to present a crucial heartfelt video & the venue had nothing but more pathetic excuses. They blew all their money on Garage doors instead! lol The management staff is very very rude, over worked, understaffed, incompetent and just plain pathetic. I wouldn't vomit on their sidewalk the next time I drove by drunk in a cab even if I was a loyal jayhawk fan! ***WARNING!!!! ***TAKE YOUR PRIVATE PARTIES ELSEWHERE! OBVIOUSLY THIS VENUE CANNOT SUPPORT PRIVATE EVENTS! SHOULD YOU TAKE THE CHANCE????????? Furthermore, this venue is NOT handicapped accessable. If I was in a wheelchair I would NOT go upstairs EVER under any circumstances, you'll just get trapped in the building owners private garage & burn up with his mercedes collectables. It's like Fort Knox getting in & out of that hole. NOT VENDOR FRIENDLY BY ANY STRETCH of the imagination! GOOD LUCK if you take the risk!

Re: “Winslow's BBQ

Wish I could rate no stars. We went there a couple of sundays ago. I had a beef sandwich and my brother had a combo. The meat was sliced and then heated up in a microwave. It tasted like microwaved heated up leftovers. Just horrible. The fries were okay but couldn't make up for the sandwich. This place could ruin Kansas City's reputation for good barbeque..!

Re: “Masalas Authentic Indian Diner - CLOSED

Despite claims of great Indian cuisine, I found the food marginal compared to others in the Kansas City area. Food quality aside, though, I was shocked this evening when the owner (or manager) chastised and berated his employees while guests were dining. Never in all my restaurant experiences have I ever witnessed such bad judgement on the part of the management. The owner may have had good cause to give his employees a yelling, but he clearly exercised poor judgement in choosing the dining area as the venue for discipline. I will never patronize this place again nor will I ever recommend Masalas to any friends or colleagues.

Re: “Justus Drugstore

I will never walk into this place again. I had intended to take a party of 7 there in a couple weeks - we are a group of friends that eat out once a month all over the city. We pride ourselves on the adventure of the group to variety and trying new places where none of us have gone before. Justus will not seat a party greater than 6 people - telling me that the kitchen can not do more than 6 at a table and that our party would have to sit at TWO TABLES. I went in on a weekday and told the hostess that we were planning a night out in two weeks with appetizers, entrees, dessert and drinks and that waiting for the 7th would not be an issue, but that we wanted to sit at one table. The hostess told me that she would have to check with the kitchen. She returned to tell me that we would have to sit at two tables - 4 at one and 3 at the other and that they would try to get us as close together as possible. I told her that it this arrangement was not acceptable and that they would not have our business. Buyer Beware!

Re: “Harry's Country Club

I visited your establishment for the first time today for lunch with my daughter, friends and granddaughters. It was one of the worst experiences I’ve had in a restaurant. To begin with, our server took our drink orders and returned about 10 minutes later with them, but she forgot one. She told us she would be right back with it, but never returned with it. About 10 or so minutes later she came back to get our order. I understand that it was busy, but when we sat down only a handful of tables were seated. After our server took our food order, she proceeded to take orders at 4 other tables, which having run a restaurant before, I understood. That way there was one trip to the kitchen to deliver the orders. But, all 4 tables received their food long before we did. One table had even left by the time we received our food. About 20 minutes after she took our order she stopped by to make sure that I had ordered a sandwich instead of a wrap. It is my belief that she did not give our order to the kitchen until after that. That is the only explanation I can come up with for the huge delay. When asked how much longer it would be, we were told it would be right out. The 7 orders dribbled out one or two at a time. My 6 year old granddaughter was the last to get hers, about 10 minutes after everyone else. It was a grilled cheese sandwich and fries. How long does it take to make that?? When the manager (I am assuming, she never identified herself as that), came over to see how everything was we told her that the food was fine, but the delay was unacceptable (or words to that effect). She explained that the kitchen was backed up because they were busy and said “look at all these people.” When we all tried to explain that we had been there since 11:35 and it was now 12:30, she said well, when some people order things that take a long time it takes a long time to get your food. How long does it take to make grilled cheese, fries, a wrap, a sandwich, the brown thing, macaroni and cheese and a hamburger???? I was so taken aback by being told to go run the kitchen, I couldn’t respond. This manager is the rudest thing I have ever run into in the service industry. I didn’t expect a free meal, but I would have certainly appreciated a little sympathy and possibly free drinks for the extremely long wait. Instead, I was rudely told to go run the kitchen and that she had apologized and didn’t know what else we expected from her. Two of us had to get back to work. We both work downtown. I had left my office at 11:25 and did not get back to that office until after 1:00. I have an hour for lunch, which is usually more than enough time to go to a restaurant, eat and still have time to get back by the time the hour is up. None of us will ever be back. I will spread the word about how rude the management is there and how slow the service and cooks seem to be. Also, if you choose to eat there, don’t you dare complain about anything…they tell you to go run the kitchen. Sue Gates

Re: “The Beaumont Club - CLOSED

Just wanted to warn anyone who may be attending the boxing matches in the near future. I went a couple of weeks ago and was shocked when I found my $25.00 ticket was good for standing room only. The tickets ran from $25.00- $60.00 (I believe). When I asked to exchange my ticket so I could get a seat, I was told I would have to wait until everyone had arrived (by this time the fights were close to over). I also stood outside of the door for an hour and a half. We were told doors would open at 6:00 PM. They did not open until 7:30 PM. I will not go back. This used to be an enjoyable place to hang out and watch a good boxing match; not so anymore.

Re: “Blanc Burgers & Bottles

Went in with my brother and found a way overpriced overly salty burger. As he said "nothing special". Sweet potato fries were good but when I asked for ketchup, she brought a doolap of ketchup. For the huge price can't they afford a friggin bottle.

Re: “Masalas Authentic Indian Diner - CLOSED

Way overpriced buffet- more hype than substance. We had to dig through the sauces to find meat. They tout the biggest buffet in KC- obviously they have not eaten at any of their competitors! It was almost $30 for two for lunch for only buffet and chai, no booze. A big waste of $$. How can tandoori chicken be greasy if it is properly cooked?

Re: “Location-less Comments

Nothing much to see here. basically a private party for chardonnay swilling hipsters that feel that art is for them, not for you. The space is claustrophobic and the apartment in back is seperated only by curtains. It's like a gathering in a messy studio. The gallerists are elitist and rude, not open to public opinion or gatherings of anyone not inside their inclusive list of friends. The art is often pompous and overstated. With the exception of the Casey Hannen textile show and the Dan Gratz Etch-A-Sketch works, this place is a snooze. Go to Mattie Rhodes (Right next door) of you want to see quality art and have a good time. These people suck. Don't waste your time here.

I had hot braised chicken, which at ever other resteraunt is like a slightly sweet and spicy sauce covering chicken, at sheng's its just brown sugar melted and poured over pre breaded frozen chicken, when i got it i couldnt eat it i had to throw it all away, it was like eating chicken flavored captain crunch.

Re: “Kansas City Blues and Jazz Juke House

This place was not that great. I was really excited to go after hearing about the great lunch specials on 107.3. First off, when my daughter and I first arrived we were unsure if we were suppose to seat ourselves because no one assisted us. When we did sit down to place an order, the waitress took our order. It took about 45 min for us to get our food, and let me not forget to mention we were the only one's there. After getting our food, the waitress never came back to check on us. My daughter had to get up to ask for napkins, she later had to get up to ask for a refill, and I even had to get up to ask for a check. Very nice establishment, horrible horrible service.....

Re: “Sunset Grill

I had the pleasure of eating breakfast last Sunday at the Sunset. I don't go out for breakfast very much so it was an exceptionally great experience. The waitress was so pleasant and not matter how many changes we made to the order she kept her smile and made sure it was right. The food was yummy, the atmosphere great and one of the owners, Rod, made sure I connected with some very good friends that were also dining there. Thanks for a great experience, Terri

Re: “Location-less Comments

I have eaten at the Corner since I was a kid. It's always been a Westport staple. Back in the 90's there was always a line out the door. In the past couple years I have ventured in a handful of times. I must say the eggs mulligan have always been my thing. I went in today for a breakfast bite. I ordered my usual mulligan and my boyfriend ordered the southwestern eggs. I ordered my eggs extra hard, even told the chef to, "violate," my egg. I was curious when our meal arrived three minutes later. Talk about wrong, my egg was raw and the muffin not even toasted... the southwest was more like a runny mess. I was so sad by the gloom of the place to begin with but the food was the real shame. I never refuse to pay for service, but this was the only thing to do. The staff did what they could, but seriously... hire a constant chef who cooks the same egg, the same way, every time. How hard is it to cook an egg, seriously! I have to assume that the Corner is a corner of the past. Westport... put in a real, hometown, KC breakfast joint. Make the corner of Westport the breakfast it once was!

Re: “Joe's Crab Shack

We waited for an hour and half after being told 45 minutes. We spoke the Manger who never apologized, never visited the table, and couldn’t handle complaints. The staff of children running the restaurant mocked us since we had to see the manager to get a table. You pay 28 bucks for King Crab but you will notice you’re bucket is practically empty. We had company in from out of town and they used to go to Joe’s in Iowa and loved it. So we were excited to eat at Joe’s. We left the house as 5:45 got to the restaurant at 6:00 finally sat to eat at 7:45 got our drinks at 7:48 our appetizer was thrown down but some kid who im pretty sure was on drugs; at 8:10 (yeah it took a long time for them to make that appetizer apparently). Our food finally came about 8:30. Each plate by some other child in a uniform, not one utensil, not one. Our waitress never brought out the food so we had to find one of the kids dancing around the restaurant. I didn’t see any adults working here. I will spare you the rest but it was the worst experience I have ever had a restaurant. Avoid this restaurant like the plague. Our friends said they don’t remember it being like this and that the food has gone completely down hill. They said they must be trying to cheapen their expenses by cutting down on portions and quality. After having this experience more and more people I talk to say that this same thing. They all say the food proportions and quality has completely gone down hill. You wouldn’t walk into a dark alley full of menacing looking guys with guns, so don’t go into Joe’s Crab Shack either!!!

Re: “Location-less Comments

I have been to my fair share of bars. But I have never experienced anything like this. The service was slow it took 20 minutes for our first round of drinks to be served for a party of four. And they were not to sure of how to make their infused drinks. You'd tell them what you wanted and they asked four times how to make it, when it was on their drink order!! Warning: the lemon drop infusion tasted like lemon pledge!!Then the second round took 16 minutes to get to us. So needless to say we we're ready for our check. Which took longer to get to us than the drinks. So we go to pay with cash and our dry witted waiter tells us they don't have change, but willing to take our money. My experience there was very unpleasant.
