Re: “Swagger Fine Spirits and Food

Instant/fountain tea and cheese SAUCE versus real cheese on their baked potato fries. Ruined what would have been a good meal (good burgers). Used to be better.

Re: “Swagger Fine Spirits and Food

Went to Martin City location around 6 o'clock on Friday night. Drove awhile to get there. Saw the Diners, Drive-in's and Dives show. No soap or paper towels in men's restroom. Sat at bar and the bartenders seemed more interested in talking to the cute, young women at the end of the bar than serving us. The parking lot was empty, just a few people inside. Ordered a bourbon off their list and they didn't even seem to know they had it. Went to a back room to pour it. They could have poured any type of bourbon in there. Had the fries and they were fresh cut and good. But wow, work on customer service and pour the drinks in front of the customer. Might try the original location, not this one again.

Re: “Torreon

Mixed reviews, just completed my first and maybe last visit to Torreon.
Nice ambiance, but a "booth" is really a table with half of its seats against the wall.
Server was very good. Chips were excellent and warm, the salsa was good.
I ordered a margarita, "Our fish bowl margarita (house blend) is good" Yuk! It tasted odd, if not weird. And, with an after burn on the tongue. I'll have a regular one, please.
A "fish bowl" of ice with a little liquid in it arrived. It tasted like a regular margarita. Ok.
I ordered the chicken fajita. My companion, two beef enchiladas, "no onions".
The enchiladas were described to me as "basic". When asked, "good, bad or indifferent"? She replied "indifferent".
The fajita tasted good, but was more or less, middle of the road as far as fajitas go. The chicken, although not completely "dry", was not moist either.
The big shock came when the check arrived. Food prices were reasonable, but they charged $18.00 for 2 margaritas! "You had top shelf". I never requested "top shelf", and there was absolutely nothing special about the two glasses loaded with ice and very little fluid, until some ice melted, that I received. They made no effort to reconsider.
So, as I told the hostess, food was ok, but I'll not be back for $9 margaritas.

Re: “Sabor y Sol

We were told that the state of Kansas would no longer allow the restaurant to sell pitchers of beer. What?

Re: “Jalisco Restaurant

This food at this restaurant is nothing special. Not terrible, but nothing to go back for. The main reason I won't go back is because of the filth. It looks like it hasn't changed or been cleaned since the 70's. I do not recommend spending time or money here.

Re: “Cantina del Ray

The only thing we liked was the salsa. The chips and taco shells were store-bought, not fresh. I had a chicken hard-shell taco that came out cold (none of the cheese on it melted at all) and leaking water. The shell was just soggy on the bottom. The burrito was just above room temperature, and nothing special. Lack of flavor to everything except the salsa.

Re: “Mingle

Not the best valve and quality of steaks in my opinion. I have been there at least 10 times to eat dinner. If you like ribeye 's save your money. Nice clean place, bar tenders sometimes need to be flagged down. They have more competition these days and they need to step up there game without increasing prices.

Re: “54th Street Grill and Bar

When they first opened this 54th ST. location on NE Barry Rd. near Liberty, it was one of only a few restaurants in that area. Now it's very built up with many choices. Many have come and several have gone in the past 10 years. The 54th St. seems to attract the shoppers from the near by strip malls and Wal-Mart. In the early years, this 54th ST. was at least OK, nothing special, but decent enough and closer to Kearney where we live than most other restaurants. But we stopped going there after a waiter, botched our large group order. Example: "Oh you wanted the salad before your meal?" Complaining only got us a gift certificate for $10. off the next visit. No thanks. On an earlier trip, our waiter asked us to give him his tip before we were done, because he was ending his shift. Amazing! To be fair, the Liberty area is service worker challenged. and good help is hard to find and harder to keep given the low wages and poor management in many of these corporate chain boxes. The food at 54th St. is similar to other family American fare style boxes like Appplebee's, etc. We usually opt for The Corner Cafe which is a few feet away from the 54th St. location.

Re: “RJ's Bob-Be-Que Shack

No A/C and one of the specialities is sweet potato fries but they were so salty and almost burnt you could not eat them...
Turkey was ok but the sauce was so dang hot.
It was pretty sad tonight!! The owner worked for Plaza 111 and the biggest restaurants in New York. Invest in an A/C unit tight wad!!!!!

Re: “Jack Gage American Tavern - CLOSED

We try JG last night, and I don't know, it just seemed OK, nothing special. We waited at the bar for a half hour and had a drink, it was fine. Then we were seated in a strange center room for dinner, was it light blue or white, not sure because the lighting was so eerie. There was nothing on the walls except marks where the chair had rubbed off their paint. Hardly inviting, and I won't lie to you, the room tainted my view of the entire night. And there were TVs all over the place, they just didn't fit in a dining area. OK so then the food came, again, it was fine, nothing exceptional, and the plating was uninspiring. The rotisserie chicken was moist, but a bit boring. The vegetarian plate was weird, just 5 random sides on a plate. And I don't know why the Pitch says it's "vegetarian friendly", because there's that and a few side salads for vegetarians, that's it! The "come back" sauce is pretty much the same stuff that you would find with any "bloomin' onion" type dish. And the place is really loud. The prices are fair, service was good, but... I just don't see us going back when there are so many better place in the area that are better than just OK.

Re: “Aladdin Café

The first time I went to Aladdin Cafe', I had a great experience. The food and service was spectacular. I went a second time, with 5 friends, much to all of our disappointment. They ran out of the special I ordered, but didn't tell me, instead they tried to serve me something else, much to my waitresses horror. I was given the option of eating the food I didn't order, or waiting another 30-45 minutes while they cooked something else. The manager never came to talk to me, until I asked to speak to him. When I did, he was the most pompous person I have ever met. No tact, nothing. After that, all I can say is that the 5 of us will never return.

Re: “EBT Restaurant

This restaurant seems to be on the downside of their popularity arch. The dated decor and openness of the room gave it a very hotel-esque feel. The service team was prompt but unenthusiastic about the menu, which clearly needs a makeover in addition to the atmosphere. Given the price of the food, the only logical conclusion is that people with money live nearby and are willing to sacrifice it for convenience. It is entirely too mediocre to spend $150 for dinner. Kansas City has great restaurants, however both the interior and the menu of EBT needs immediate updating to be considered one of them.

Re: “Em Chamas Brazilian Grill

My Father and I took some friends from Springfield,Mo. here, upon my suggestion.I had read a few reviews and they deemed it a worthy place to take these people.Boy!! We were disappointed on a large scale. We found the meat to be salty and overcooked. The salad bar was comprised of basic open the can and dump in a fancy bowl dishes and the soups were very much the same.We all agreed that you paid for ambience. Which was nothing more than the same fancy woodwork from the previous failed restaurant, that we also tried one Sunday for Brunch. The only word that comes to my mind is "Lackluster".

Re: “Jess and Jim's Steak House

I had heard really good things about Jess and Jim's since I moved to KC 11 years ago but never found the time to try it. Well I tried it and was extremely disappointed! The pickled beets as a complimentary appetizer were a nice touch, but the rest of the meal was not so great. The salad was bland and uninspiring. They might as well dump it straight from a Dole salad bag. The garlic toast was thick and somewhat soggy. Now we get to the entrees. The chicken was dry and overcooked with not a hint of seasoning. It kind of reminded me of Popeye's chicken at triple the price. The ribeye was pan fried and crusted. Again, without a hint of seasoning. Very plain and bland. It was something I could have done myself at home with a hot frying pan on the stove. Sadly, the twice cooked potato was the best part of the meal. Even the coffee was bitter and would be better served on a hunting trip. The service was adequate but nothing spectacular. The decor has probably not changed in 20 years. Old and dated. Overall, a very disappointing evening. Don't bother wasting your time or money with Jess and Jim's, there are a lot better places to eat in the local area.

Re: “Coach's Bar and Grill

It doesn't seem that anyone who cares, looks athe the food before it's served to the customers. Mistakes on every plate that was served. The list is too long to list all. They make their own potato chips, they were served un-seasoned and either over cooked or almost raw. Garlic toast served with ceasar salad, room temp, untoasted, bread w/ garlic butter on it. I could go on. I wouldn't go again there for food. Everyone sitting at the bar seemed to be having a good time.

Re: “Jaywalkers Sports Bar and Grill

Food is good but not worth enduring the terible service. Went there for lunch on a Friday-it took 1 hour and 45 minutes to get out of there. The waitress never brought us utencils-good thing we ordered sandwiches and fries. I got up and got us napkins for my goup myself. The waitress kept having customers ask her to take their order (probably becasue she takes forever to come back) so she took them out of turn which then meant we did not even get our order taken until we had sat there 25 minutes. Don't ever say you need a minute-the waitress won't be back for a long while-she will likely be hanging up at the bar talking to her friends. Finally, a firend onf mine waived down the only other waitress who took our order. The cook delivered our food finally. One of my firends had a question on her bill (which was not correct) and the waitress seemed put out and stated to our group "I know what I am doing". She left and went to the back of the retaurant and started throwing things. I tried to catch her because I wanted to get the managers name and number. Got it from the other waitress. Turns out the number is just the main number to the restaurant and I have left the manager 2 messages with no return call and I have gone to their website and asked for the manager or owner to call me back. Two weeks later nothing. This was not the first time like this either. My group likes the food but why go to Jaywalkers becasue the service will make you mad and it is not worth the bother. Go the other direction to the Bell Street restaurants.

Re: “Extra Virgin

Very disappointing. I have been to several tapas restaurants and sizes of the dishes here were smaller than I have ever had. Started with CRAB STUFFED PIQUILLO PEPPERS, I expected some heat form the pepper and there was none and I couldn't taste the crab at all. Next, CRISPY PIG EAR SALAD was very good. The ears were tasty and juicy. Next, GRILLED BABY OCTOPUS: The octopus was BURNT! The dish had no depth of flavor, very bland. Next, CHORIZO & FIG FILLED CHICKEN THIGHS: Hardly any chorizo in the dish and couldn't taste ANY fig. For desert, PEACH CROSTADA was BURNT too! After getting another, it wasn't any better than a peach cobbler I could buy at the store. CHURROS & CHOCOLATE was no better than what I can get at Taco Bell.

Re: “Justus Drugstore

Went to Justus the first time the other day. Went last minute with no reservation on a tuesday night. We expected to wait. 1 hour wait for the patio. No biggie, had a drink and sat around and looked over the place. After the hour finally got seated on patio. 45 minutes later we got our drinks we orderd. 1 hour after that we got our entree...a kobe burger. Now if we had orderd a full meal I would have expected a wait, but we are now 2 hours and 45 minutes into getting two drinks and a burger on the patio. An hour later we finally finish dessert and can leave. Here are the cold hard facts.... 3 hours and 45 minutes to get served a burger on the patio. Sorry, Justus, no matter how you spread the home made condiments...this is completely unacceptable. We are going to try dining inside next time. If we have a similar experience, then no matter how tasty the food might be, we will not be back. We understand that they are actually "cooking" all the food. A leisurely meal is certainly nice, but waiting for trees to grow and fruit to ripen so you can serve it is a little tedious for your cutomers. The patio should have a quicker service time. The menu is grilled burgers and sausages..... the jury is out.
