I took my wife out to Harper's for Valentine's Day last night, and it was by far the worst service I have ever received at a restaurant in my entire life. We sat at our table for 30 minutes before any employee even acknowledged us. At that time, an employee asked if we had been helped. We said no, and she said "Okay, well let me take your drink orders and find you a waitress." She took our drink orders. Fifteen minutes later, a waitress finally came to our table. However, drinks still had not come. (All we ordered was 3 waters and 1 Sprite for our party of four). At this point, my friend went to the bathroom and filled his glass with water from the restroom sink, because it was becoming painfully obvious that it would be too difficult for an employee to bring him a glass of water.
After we had been seated for 45 minutes, our "waitress" finally took our order. Amazingly, our food took only 10 minutes from the time we ordered it. However, when we received it, we still had no silverware, no napkins, and no drinks! Five minutes later, exactly one hour after we arrived at our table, we finally received 3 glasses of water. However, my wife, who ordered the complex drink known as Sprite, received some tasteless soda water instead. Realizing that our waitress was too incompetent to process this order, we finally flagged down another employee to get a glass of Sprite for her.
The food itself was fine, but for a $15 meal you would think you could get somebody to bring you a water and/or a fork within one hour of your arrival to accompany your food.
When we finished eating, our server took my credit card. God only knows where she took it, but half an hour passed before I got it back. All in all, our actual eating experience took about 15 minutes, but we were at the restaurant for two hours. This caused us to be late for the jazz concert across the street at the Blue Room. By the time we arrived there, the show was standing room only, and my pregnant wife had to stand in the back of the crowded club, rather than have the luxury of actually sitting down. We figured that an hour and a half should be enough time to eat and get to the show on time, but obviously we were mistaken.
I don't know what was going on with the Harper's staff last night, but it was the most incompetent group of employees I have ever seen at any establishment, whether restaurant or otherwise. I could have found people outside on the street and asked them to come inside, and they would have served us a hundred times better than the people who are actually getting paid to do so. I have had bad service before, but never anywhere near this atrocious. It was the first time in my life that I did not tip my server, and I didn't feel a bit guilty.

I just have to completely disagree with any good comments on this place. We had the tuna rolls, eggplant and filet mignon and I can't imagine EVER EATING THAT FOOD AGAIN. The service was less than horrible and the food was even worse. The only "good"....and by "good" I mean edible thing we had to eat, was the rice - which isn't saying much for the "contemporary chinese" cuisine that we just paid over $60.00 for. All in all, there are hundreds of other chinese places in the KC area that by far exceed this restaurant's best days by one million percent. Save your money, the drive and your stomach from this monstrasity of a fine dining experience.

Good food is like music. A number of ingredients (like music instruments) come together to create music on your tastebuds. Sadly, sometimes, it turns into noise. Such is the food at this establishment.
I tried the buffet but could not eat anything. The goat an dbeef entrees needed a tad more marinating. The others just did not come together. The only saving grace was the hostess who seemed to go out of her way to help.

Has gone down hill since that last time our family ate here.
I have eaten here in the past for dinner which was perfectly acceptable. We (2 adults, 2 kids) tried breakfast today and I left knowing that I would most likely never come back. The restaurant was busy on Sunday for lunch and after having been in business for several years I would expect that they would be better prepared for a busy Sunday. After a short wait we were seated to our table.
The first strike for me was that their famous biscuits in gravy are not available after 11:00 a.m. even though breakfast is advertised as being served all day. We placed our order after a few minutes. Over 40 minutes later we finally received our order. My order was half incorrect, one my son's order was half complete, and all of the food was between lukewarm to cool. After some reminders to the waitress she finally completed my son's order.
Receiving the food almost cold and after taking such a long time is unacceptable to me as there are other restaurants for me to go to that perform better.

The food was bland, the service was unatentive and disorganized. The dining area is light up like a cafeteria, with tables jammed next to each other leaving little room to move.

This is the worst BBQ in Kansas City. Dry, tasteless BBQ served slowly with a surly attitude. Frankly, Beauchamps' is what I imagine food in prison would be like.
It wasn't a bad night...after having identical experiences on two occasions, sadly I have to conclude that this is just a bad restaurant.
For example, my steak was seriously miss-cooked, and when I mentioned this to the manager, he refused to recook it or make it right. We ended up waiting over forty-five minutes to be served a basic order of ribs and sliced meats.
Don't waste your time, or more importantly, your money.

Our food was inedibly salty, and I had a puddle of oil in the bottom of my pasta bowl. When we sent it back, the owner came out and started yelling and arguing with us. After he harassed us, he charged us for all three inedible dishes! What a rip-off - this place is terrible. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone!!!

The owner of this winery is a very bitter and foul old man. We arrived at his place of business 30 minutes prior to opening. I let my dog out on her leash to stretch her legs because we'd been driving awhile. He drove up in his truck and told us to get off his property. I explained we were there to do business and he said he didn't want our business and again told us to get off his property. The winery itself is in a rundown old gas station and what part of the vinyard I could see was very ill-tended having been overrun with weeds.

Anticipating one of the best steaks ever, (my father raved about real Kansas City Strips) I was greatly disappointed, and then angry at the response to my complaint.
I could not cut the large Kansas City Strip with the very good knife they provided. Chewing this piece of leather was impossible. When I complained, they allowed me to replace it with a filet, about the size of a golf ball on steroids.
They did not offer a free dessert, or any other kind of recompense.
Considering the cost of this meal, I would never return to any of their restaurants.
Boo.

I have to say, I've never differed from a professional food critic's opinion on a fine eating establishment as much as I had when concerning "Avenues Bistro" in the Brookside area of Kansas City. I have never been so ignored or overcharged in all my days. For $30 you can recieve the so-called "Filet Mignon", which is nothing but an over-priced lump of charcoal-flavored cardboard, and served by waiters who are almost as attentive as said lump. In fact, the nicest thing about this place was how quickly I received my check. If you wish to waste your hard-earned money on a $120 meal, please go there. Otherwise, I highly recommend you go elsewhere. In other words.....
DO NOT DINE HERE!!!!!!!!!!!

I have gone to this restaurant since it opened. I had a somewhat identical experience as the 1st review. The food used to always be fresh and plentiful. The time before last, they were low on a lot of stuff, when I asked if more was coming out, they brought more food out in a timely manner. When I went last night at 8:15, they close at 9:30, everything on the entree side of the buffet was old, crusty and half empty with no meat, just veggies that were wilted and disgusting looking. When I asked if more stuff was coming out the server told me that it was too close to closing time and that they might be out of shrimp but she would check and see if they would make more. I sat and waited for about 20 minutes, snacking on appetizers (since that was the only thing on the buffet that looked edible) for the server to let me know if more food was coming out. She came back and told me that when she asked, they just said "ok" and she did not know if they were making more or not so I waited about another 10 minutes and when no food came out I went to talk to the person I was told was manager. When I spoke with him at not even 9PM he told me it was too close to closing time to make any more food. When I told him we arrived an hour and a half before they closed and asked for food refills he just started talking to the server in chinese and she told me that they would not charge me. That did not solve the probem. They still charged my mother and my friend $10 a piece for crusty, dried up, old, nasty food that was not worth 50 cents. They probably had a major case of the mud butts from eating it anyway after sitting under food lamps for so long. I will never eat at this place again even though it used to be my favorite chinese restaurant in town, my business is now going to Dragon Inn in Corinth Square which actually has excellent food. I don't know if they are under new ownership/management, but this place really stinks now. DONT GO TO THIS PLACE UNLESS YOU HAVE NO TASTEBUDS AND WANT DIAREAHA AND STOMACH PAINS!!

I ordered the Antipasti platter for dinner. The first ingredient on the menu is "Artisan Cheeses" so understandably, I thought there would be plenty of cheese on the platter. There were about 4, small, quarter sized SHAVINGS of cheese on this large platter. When I mentioned this to my server obviously thinking there had been an oversight, she stated the cheese was a "garnish" -- clearly not the way the menu was written -- and offered to bring more cheese. Imagine my surprise when $2.00 additional showed up on my bill! I paid the bill and mentioned my disappointment about the situation to the maitre d' on the way out. He could have cared less!! I won't be going back - not only does the menu over promise and under deliver, but the management is rude and clearly doesn't value the customer.

I do not understand why this place is seemingly always crowded! There is a HyVee market within walking distance where you can get the same food and nuke it yourself in your own microwave! I know it is in Kansas, but I cannot possibly believe that Kansans really think the food here is even remotely similar to traditional mexican cuisine.

Re: “Location-less Comments”
Service is terrible. They do not honor the Major Savings Card we purchased from my son's elementary school. We have no problem to use multiple Major Savings Cards in other restaurants listed in the card. The food quality is ok, but they are overpriced. I will never go back to this restaurant again.
