As for the pointy roof... this was originally a Griff's Burger Bar:

Re: “Avenues Bistro gets bigger, goes smaller — and tastes better

If Charles Ferruzza ever needs to suppliant the stipend he gets from the Pitch, he should begin a servers training and placement business.
Hell, it even sounds like a great idea for a Food Network show. Food is food, but a good or great server can make even an average meal into a good dining experience.

Re: “Avenues Bistro gets bigger, goes smaller — and tastes better

Wow. I go there regularly and have never had a bad experience. It is so much better in lounge , although a bit noisy when crowded. But the service is great. James and Kelsy are my 2 favorite bartenders. ask for 1 of them and you should be good

Re: “Avenues Bistro gets bigger, goes smaller — and tastes better

I was starting to think we were the only ones who have gotten incredibly lousy service there, but I see from the comments that this isn't the case. We have eaten there three times since the remodel (and at least once every month or so before that, to give you an idea of how many times). Well, it was actually only twice since the remodel. The third time, we got our drinks and sat and waited and waited and waited for our food. They weren't that busy, the server kept apologizing, and we finally got tired of waiting (and were really sick of hearing the screaming baby from clear across the restaurant, everyone appeared to be bothered; not sure why restaurant management didn't take care of that). After 40 minutes, we paid for our drinks and left. We've never ever done that before. The other two times, the service was slow and staff was inattentive. It's strange, we rarely ever experience bad service anywhere. In fact, we usually frequent the same places and we always tip generously, and so servers at our favorite places go out of their way to give us great service, which is much appreciated. But I don't think we have ever gotten decent service at this place, and I cannot imagine why. I don't know what is going on at Avenues, but I doubt we will try it again.

Re: “Avenues Bistro gets bigger, goes smaller — and tastes better

I don't know where he got his service, but ours has consistently been poor. Formerly known as entrees still appear to have the same mix of tomatoes artichokes capers sauce that appears on too many dishes. Certainly an "extender" and a way to keep cost down....but he did that before. Food is inconsistent and I wish I could count on this place to be a "go to" but I always approach with caveat emptor.

Re: “Want some contest-quality barbecue in KCK? Hurry up – you're already late

These guys catered my wedding; they've got the absolute best ribs, burnt ends, and potato salad (dear JESUS that potato salad!) I've ever had in my life. Great guys, great food.

Re: “Avenues Bistro gets bigger, goes smaller — and tastes better

I agree with BKSian. Food is A+, but the service is usually a D. And thats after multiple times of going back for brunch, lunch and dinner. Sitting at the bar, is the worst. Sloppy dressed, poor attention to the customer, unfriendly and lack of attention. Love the new menu and food. Nice decor and feels quite comfortable, but the staff could use a changing of the guard or at least one of those Restaurant Stakeout to see whats really going on. Maybe I'm wrong.

Great article! The new lounge and renovated Avenues Bistro dining room is fantastic. I've always enjoyed the food and friendly staff but now I have more of an excuse to visit more frequently. Their brunch and happy hour specials are incredible. A must try for those who haven't yet!

Re: “Avenues Bistro gets bigger, goes smaller — and tastes better

I was there this past weekend and the food was fantastic. Our server was terrible though. The place was busy, but he couldn't have had less of a sense of urgency - we sat for more than 15 minutes before we even ordered our first drink, after finishing those drinks they sat empty for a good amount of time before we were ever able to order a second round. I can't say enough about the food though, everything we had was excellent. I will definitely be going back and hopefully will have a different server.

Re: “Jimmy Frantze's new J.J.'s is just that — an original

That's just too much money to spend on a meal. $50 for a steak? I could buy 5 pizzas for $50. I won't be going there.

Re: “Jimmy Frantze's new J.J.'s is just that — an original

I have been racking my brain trying to remember the name of the first JJ Malones. Thanks for the flashback! Loved that place and was disappointed when it became JJ's but, not for too long. Soon my heart was won over. Mostly I liked the first sign better, I thought the first JJ's sign looked painted by a 3rd grader and figured the food was the same. Once I started going though it didn't take long to fall in love. Fast forward...The new JJ's is wonderful, though just a tad more pretentious. And, the Paco Shrimp is, well, my mouth is watering just typing Paco Shrimp. Jimmy needs to poll some of his female clients. Females eat the desserts. We went with 4 couples and all the females ordered a dessert that the males were required to "help" them with. Still Iconic!

Ollie Hates - be careful, when you call Charles FakeReviewer out he get's your email and ipaddress blocked by the not very liberal Pitch. But what do you expect from a reviewer who has no objectivity, talent or taste.

The quality of food is superior to Rosedale to be sure. I'll always pay more for quality.

Re: “Char Bar Smoked Meats & Amusements is killing it in Westport

Haven't been here yet, but excited to try it. So much of the credit goes to the chef Jeremy Tawney, who is a super talented and inventive chef. Glad the owners are letting him do his thing.

Higher prices at BBQ joints seems to be the new standard. Ate at Q39 last week and for a sandwich, fries and 2 beers it was $30 (great food, though). The server asked us "Have you guys been to Char Bar? I hear the service is terrible but the burnt ends are good." I thought it was odd that an employee there was trash-talking another spot. Almost liked he'd been told to do so. A little cue rivalry, perhaps?

Re: “Char Bar Smoked Meats & Amusements is killing it in Westport

This place isn't trying to be Joe's. It's Hipster Jack Stack (not that there's anything wrong with that)....A two meat plate at Jack Stack is $14.00.

Ollie Hates I stand corrected. I didn't look far enough down the dinner menu. My apologies to you.

Can't we just love Joe's and Char Bar? Is that such a crime? :D

http://www.joeskc.com/oklahoma-joes-bar-b-que-restaurant-menu/

actually a 2-meat plate plus side and toast is $11.99. and it's better and you get more of it. not knocking char bar, really, just thought it odd that, of all the petty things that Ferruzza often bitches about, he failed to mention that Char Bar is quite expensive. i have lived in KC all my life and have been to dozens of bbq places, and Char Bar is the most expensive I have ever been to (granted I have not yet been to Q39).

Re: “Char Bar Smoked Meats & Amusements is killing it in Westport

Hey Ollie Hates....a 2-meat plate with a side at Joe's Kansas City is $13.29 to $13.89. And you get a VERY limited beer selection there with nothing in the way of atmosphere. You might do some research for similar BBQ joints before posting a concern about the prices.
