Re: “The Jay-Z and Kanye West Hipster Posturing Timeline

Wow what a piece of trash. I mean, honestly, what hipster hasn't co-opted their style? That's what being a hipster is! Ever heard of Urban Outfitters.

And why, exactly, is it so hard to believe Jay-Z listens to Grizzly Bear? And why is it so hard to believe that he actually, yanno, enjoys it, because, yanno, it's good music, rather than "liking" it for marketing purposes? Did it ever cross your mind that he might possibly like it AND happen to benefit from it?

Re: “The Jay-Z and Kanye West Hipster Posturing Timeline

While this is a fun little tap dance with track spikes on two windbags who more or less deserve the ire, I have to take issue with the Jay-Z portion of the "2005" entry. The 80's Baby released "Vol. 3 - The Life & Times Of S. Carter" in 2000, which contained the hugely successful single "Big Pimpin'" featuring none other than UGK. "Big Pimpin'" charted at #18 on the Billboard Hot 100, #3 on the Rap Singles chart, and #1 on the Rhythmic Top 40 - all at a time when people still bought CDs, listened to the radio, and watched music videos to find out about music. I don't think Jay-Z's participation in "Get Throwed" is due to "white music critics" championing Southern hip-hop (which I'm pretty sure is here to stay - has been for over a decade or so now).

Re: “The Jay-Z and Kanye West Hipster Posturing Timeline

Believe me, I LOVE to call out hipster bullshit, but this is a whole lot of giving-a-shit. Personally, I think the quickest way to squelch hipsterdom is to wrap it in such commercial duds as these two marketing juggernauts. Everything can be traced back to a dollar sign. I can't wait until hipsters become mainstream. Or have we already crossed the line? One can dream. Bravo gents. Keep killing them softly with your song.

Re: “Haunted Houses

It's good to know that the "music" section is now known as the "Bar review and nightlife gossip page". I guess there were no shows this week, no bands to be featured, and no new sounds under the sun. Congrats Pitch, you have turned into the People magazine of the jaded midtown set.

Re: “Haunted Houses

Also @ Burt------Your point #3 really summed up the biz climate in Westport / Midtown .

@Burt-----Well said sir----------and @ The Pitch writer----Those "bizarre eye stabbing incidents" always do put a damper on the festivities.

Re: “Haunted Houses

1. Quit writing about the gusto and its various shit-tastic incarnations. 504 westport failed thirty-seven times for a reason, with deeper pockets than this.

2. IF the Record Bar dudes bought the old gusto and are making it into a bar...Hopefully they don't lose their asses on it and tank the Record Bar in the process.

3. Too many bar/venues in town vying for the same broke customer base does not equal profits and or longevity.

4. Hipsters in this town want to continue experiencing low turnout and failed businesses? This is how its done.

5. Good luck with your original bands. Maybe you can pay off your bar tab at the end of the night for more than a few weeks/months in a row.

6. I catch a lot of flack for these posts. Yes. But no one is saying it. Its hard enough to entertain, or try to be entertained in this town. I don't think this is helping. Record Bar managed to come in at the correct time when the Hurricane was transitioning and made it work. Its not the perfect solution, but I wish them the best. Less is more. Fewer venues, fewer opportunities for bands. The bands have to be better, the crowds larger, the buzz more genuine. Harder earned.

Re: “Diamond Dealer

Ben Harper states that the chorus of "Picture of Jesus" is Allah. Except the choir sings "Halala." Not Allah. A friend of my from Zimbabwe had never heard of Ben Harper or his song, recognized the song that Ladysmith Black Mambazo was singing. He said they were singing something like "Holy" or "Glory" (can't quite recall), but it was in fact a Christian worship song. Another friend of mine from Zim recognized it as well, and knew a dance that went along with it.

I don't think Ben knew what they were singing.

Re: “Greg Enemy, Sophisticated Goon

Great article! Greg sounds like an interesting rapper who's doing it "right".

This guy reminds me of one of my friends, Mic. Mic is a local artist to Kansas City who raps about real life.

We just did a Halloween-themed video that you can check out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvQaB0CIMh0

Thanks for looking and congrats Greg Enemy! Keep moving forward bro.

agreed.
"Is it weird having executives with so much control over the process?"
An important element of why some record with labels or not.

Well written. This writer asked a lot of the questions that I would have asked the band. I could have kept reading more and more. It's a shame it wasn't a longer piece. Any more articles by this guy?

Re: “Block Party

I have a dubbed tape of the entire "out on bail" album! I got it when I lived in Kansas City for a year when I was 10, from my sister who dated this dude who apparently knew dragi d, and dj styles. What a GREAT album. Those dudes were way ahead of their time! I need all of their music to complete my collection. Anyone have any info?
