Im confused. I listened to Hospitality, and the singer (Papini), has a very distinct English accent. Yet this article says that she grew up in KC.
Man...I know it wasn't meant to sound like it but this article made it sound like he was on his death bed before the accident. He was sick..but not that sick. I'm very glad Cadillac Flambe has gone on and is doing well. No reason to justify why the band would go on without him. Everyone knows dad would have wanted that no matter when or how he passed. I don't think anyone knew his death was going to be "soon" though. :( We all miss you dad...so much.
My boy friend introduced me to Ron Ron when we started dating we gotta get KANSAS CITY ON THE MAP AN THIS THE WAY TO DO IT I LOVE RON RON WE NEED TO GET LYRICS FOR THIS MAN
I think the key is having fun! You don't always make the best stuff but as long as you love what you're doing, nothing can stop you. Now I'll step down from my soapbox...
"I have to say, it really blew my mind that this band of people from New York, who had no connection to this place, could come down, listen to people, take in the culture, and then make such an authentic film. They really grasped the culture of family loyalties, not telling things to strangers, self-reliance."
It doesn't surprise me at all. New York social documentarians have deep roots in the counterculture. They're politically left, which gives them an empathy with the less fortunate or the ignored, and they're ethically (if not ethnically) Jewish, which increases their empathy and gives them the gift of curiosity and truth-telling.
A New Yorker also learns to respect people's discretion and their need for privacy and secrecy in a way that is not often found outside the concrete canyons and the mountain hollows.
You mentioned Mumford and Sons in this article?? Or as Mark E Smith refers to them "Fucking Sons of Mumford"!! ?? Otherwise , it was a good read.
First saw em at the old Music Box on Troost in 82. ---- One of the best live acts ever----All you alt country wannabes should go see em to see how its really done!!
Talking about hipster culture is the most inane form of entertainment right now. Typically the people who spend the most time maligning it are hipsters themselves. Its about being self referential while being in denial. No body explicitly admits to being a hipster, they just criticize other people with their tongue slightly in their cheek.
I just got "The singing Mailman Delivers" the other day.
John is a great singer/songwriter. It sounds like Jason is setting the stage for one of his heroes. That has to be a cool feeling.
And how about that Spook Lights cut? HAWT.
Oh,and Linkin Park asked Jay to work with them.Funny thing is,I don't even particulary like Jay but you should really take more pride in your work.It is obvious that you don't respect rap or black music in general. As if some shitty Steely Dan sample used for the worst track off of Graduation is the cause for Kanye West's success.I REALLY DO FEEL THAT YOU ARE A RACIST.Every sample mentioned is by a white artist. You could've mentioned Curtis Mayfield,Otis Redding,or many other black artists that are sampled on those albums but you chose white artists in order to denigrate Kanye,as if he isn't the genius behind those albums(he doesn't even play an instrument!!!).If I were to apply your logic, then Will Ferrell and the Blades of glory sample are what makes Nigga's in Paris a great song.So let's get this straight-if a black hip hop artist samples another artist, credits them, and gives them shit tons of money, then they are not an artist but a thief and a hack, but if Led Zeppilen, the Beach Boys or many of the other numerous white artists throughout music history steal a riff or whole song from an old blues artist(i.e. black man),don't credit or pay the original artist, then they are still artists and respected? It's okay for Portishead to sample but not Kanye West????You sir,are a RACIST and a lazy, ignorant, journalist.SHAMEFUL,goddamn,SHAMEFUL!
I stopped reading the article because it's author is ignorant of his subjects.Kanye West is Jay's protege? In what world?Yeezy's a better m.c.(has been since dropout) and a brilliant producer. He has more in common with Prince and Brian Wilson than Jay-Z and he's been reppin Portishead and Fiona Apple since day one(you know, back when most of the rap establishment was saying he was gay for wearing a pink polo). The thing about Yeezy is he don't give a fuck. When his second album came out he called out other rappers for using homophobic words in their lyrics even though he knew it would just fuel the homophobic gay slander.Do you even listen to rap(?)or music at all?So Jay-Z recognized a growing trend of music critics fetishizing southern rap in 2005 and that's why he recorded Get Throwed with UGK and Jeezy?Um,yeah,Jay broke UGK into the mainstream when he put em on Big Pimpin back in 98.Granted,they released their first album in I believe 89 and their classic Ridin Dirty came out in 96 but nobody in the mainstream was bumpin that shit til Jay put em on.And as for Jeezy-Jay was the one that signed him(!)when he was president Def Jam Left or South or whatever that shit was called. The only hipster I see here is you.You came up with a hipster idea for an article and then either ignored the facts or didn't bother to check em.So you don't believe Jay-z could possibly love Grizzly Bear? That's probably because your'e racist or just a jackass. Not everything is a calculated or strategic move done to court press. The type of people that would be impressed that Hov listens to Grizzly Bear still ain't gonna bump his shit(for the most part). And Kanye isn't tryin to earn people's respect by name dropping Portishead. He's doin it because he wants to give props to the artists that have influenced him.To quote Outkast off their first classic album-"Are you an OutKast?
If you understand and feel the basic principles and
Fundamental truths contained within this muzik, you probably are
If you think it's all about pimpin hoes and slammin cadillac do's
You probably a cracker, or a nigga that think he a cracker
Or maybe just don't understand." Now,I'm gonna go back and finish your piece of shit article while you try and come up with some kind of defense for your ignorance. You hipster doofus.
Wow what a piece of trash. I mean, honestly, what hipster hasn't co-opted their style? That's what being a hipster is! Ever heard of Urban Outfitters.
And why, exactly, is it so hard to believe Jay-Z listens to Grizzly Bear? And why is it so hard to believe that he actually, yanno, enjoys it, because, yanno, it's good music, rather than "liking" it for marketing purposes? Did it ever cross your mind that he might possibly like it AND happen to benefit from it?
Does this guy actually know what he's talking about.
While this is a fun little tap dance with track spikes on two windbags who more or less deserve the ire, I have to take issue with the Jay-Z portion of the "2005" entry. The 80's Baby released "Vol. 3 - The Life & Times Of S. Carter" in 2000, which contained the hugely successful single "Big Pimpin'" featuring none other than UGK. "Big Pimpin'" charted at #18 on the Billboard Hot 100, #3 on the Rap Singles chart, and #1 on the Rhythmic Top 40 - all at a time when people still bought CDs, listened to the radio, and watched music videos to find out about music. I don't think Jay-Z's participation in "Get Throwed" is due to "white music critics" championing Southern hip-hop (which I'm pretty sure is here to stay - has been for over a decade or so now).
Believe me, I LOVE to call out hipster bullshit, but this is a whole lot of giving-a-shit. Personally, I think the quickest way to squelch hipsterdom is to wrap it in such commercial duds as these two marketing juggernauts. Everything can be traced back to a dollar sign. I can't wait until hipsters become mainstream. Or have we already crossed the line? One can dream. Bravo gents. Keep killing them softly with your song.
Thank you, thank you, thank you... you're far too kind
Please get time of show in article next time. I don't see it...
It's good to know that the "music" section is now known as the "Bar review and nightlife gossip page". I guess there were no shows this week, no bands to be featured, and no new sounds under the sun. Congrats Pitch, you have turned into the People magazine of the jaded midtown set.
Re: “Good Foot, 'Bad Way'”
What??? Ive personally never seen The Good Foot , but ive read the mounds of press and am aware of all the high profile gigs they get in this city. They are a cover band??
