Re: “Letters from the week

A little chubby and overly sensitive, Kelly? Chubby is not a condemnation; just a description. Further, it does have a place in a restaurant review as it makes the article, as well as all other descriptions and thoughts, interesting. I don't want some mechanical listing of entrees, appetizers, decor, prices and grades. I want a damn story, and Mr. C did just fine. Being chubby is no sin. I myself am chubby as hell. Overly sensitive? Well, it ain't no sin, but it ain't no fun either.

Re: “Letters from the week of April 15

In March a friend that was working his last shift at 7-11 was shot and killed after meeting the robber’s demands. We have composed the Tony Singh bill and need 100,000 signatures in 60 days. What we are asking is that convince stores in bad areas do ONE for the following; put up bullet proof glass, have a panic button, hire a security guard, have more then one employee working together overnight or close after dark. People can sign online at www.mdalam.com or come out to 7-11 on Bannister and James A. Reed any Saturday starting today threw June 1st. If you have any question, feel free to contact me.

Re: “Glass Houses

Ed Morris.......I worked for Buck during the 1950s. What you say is absolutely correct. In addition, let me say that Buck kept guys in the neighborhood like me out of trouble by putting us to work. He also paid my way through my first year of college. He was one of those people in my life who made a difference....Frank Zahn

Re: “Letters from the week of April 8

Olathe FD has 7 fire stations covering 54.5 square miles. That's a station for every 7.79 square miles. KCKFD has one station for every 7.1 square miles. Olathe does not provide ambulance service, instead contracting with Johnson County Med Act. KCKFD provides its own ambulance service. Olathe has less than 10,000 calls for service each year. KCKFD had just under 25,000 calls for service in 2009.

Re: “Letters from the week of April 8

Mr. Martin, your continued lack of obtaining facts in your attack of the KCKFD is appalling.

GM may receive tax breaks however, the GM plant still pays approximately $10 million per year in property taxes, making it one of the largest tax payers in Wyandotte County.

Overland Park has 5 fire stations with a total fire department budget in 2009 of $18.75 million. That comes to $3.75 million per fire station.

KCKFD has 18 stations with a total fire department budget of $42.82 million in 2009. This figure includes the ambulance service with 11 full time ambulances. That comes to $2.37 million per fire station, and this figure includes the ambulance service.

KCKFD covers 127.8 square miles, OPFD covers only 65.3 square miles.

OPFD has agrrements with, and provides funds to the Consolidated Fire District 2 (3 stations) to provide service in the northern part of the city and some eastern parts of the city. They also have an agreement and pay Johnson County Rural Fire District No.2 (four stations) to provide services to the southern part of their city.

So you see sir, not only does OPFD cost much more per station to operate, it also has to contract with two other fire departments to provide services to their community. They also contract with Johnson County Med Act to provide ambulance services. KCKFD provides all services on their own without having to contract with outside services like OPFD.

You really should research things more.

Would all of you brain-dead pot heads stop trying to convince everyone that legalization of ANY drug is a good idea?!? Marijuana has some SERIOUS long term hazards that the rest of us don't want to have to pay for. If you want to get high, move somewhere that the people don't mind paying for your health care when it kicks you in the ass!

Re: “Letters from the week of
March 25

When Justin Kendall wrote, "Earlier this weekend. tea party protesters chanted "Kill the bill, nigger" at Cleaver and members of the Congressional Black Caucus who attended a speech on health care by the president on Saturday," there was ample videotaped evidence available that no such thing was ever chanted by "protesters" or likely even a "protester." No one heard it but Cleaver, and at least two members of his crew were video-ing the event. This gratuitous smear of a whole movement meets the standard for both reckless and malicious. I would recommend an apology to head off a libel suit.

Re: “Letters from the week
of February 4

Carlyn did a fantastic job. Anyone pointing fingers at her must know better. She gave each side a fair deal and it will be ridiculous for anyone to poke holes on her obviously professionally done investigations and reporting. JVS was given the opportunity to speak and there is no one other than the Executive director and the director of refugee resettlement to address the issues better. In an organization, we have spokes people and we have spademen. A spokesman has to be someone with information on the day today activities of the organization and the issues arising from the activities and effects on their clients. A journalist cannot carry out pedestrial reporting and ignore the organization's chief executives because that will be unprofessional. It was the duty of Joy Foster and her refugee resettlement director to get their facts from the likes of Cathy if they thought what they had was not sufficient for the reporter. Instead, Joy obviously was to show her tears and Steve was to be arrogant and defensive. In my opinion, JVS was given adequate opportunity to respond to the issues under question. I am not sure on whose behalf Cathy Anderson is speaking because she has no knowledge on refugee resettlement. There is a significant difference between social work and the actual refugee resettlement that involves casemanaging of the new arrivals from various parts of the world to Kansas City. In her complaint, Cathy is implying that Carolyn engaged in arm-chair journalism. This is shameful to think that way! I have never seen a thoroughly well researched article like the one Carolyn did. The Pitch may not be a daily newspaper but the efforts made by Carolyn to expose the rot at JVS cannot be gainsaid. We all know that since last year, refugees have been treated very badly at JVS. They are left to fend for themselves even when they are hardly 2 months old t know their way around KC. You can lie but you cannot hide the truth.
