"In his recent essay "Dear Musicians Please Be Brilliant or Get Out of the Way," Dave Allen argues that to make money in the digital age, musicians must abandon the old model of releasing albums on labels and focus on selling the experience that surrounds their own, individual brands." It's kinda funny to be warned to "be brilliant or get out of the way" by a guy who hasn't done anything musically "brilliant" in nearly 30 years! Ultimately, people don't consume music for the spectacle or the band brand, they consume music for the music. When the internet dust settles, all these marketing gurus will realize this (most musicians already do) and we will end up with a "new" music industry remarkable similar to the so-called "old model".

this article is dead on. There's a reason most (including myself honestly) envy Bill Pile, he knows how KC works, and how to make it work when it doesn't want to. As a DJ, i've been playing out for almost 4 years now, and still haven't seen quite the turn-outs he has had, aside from C-Vaughn's annual show. As a hopeful potential future event organizer, i would definately want Bill Pile as my mentor as to how to do things here in KC. When you're consistantly booking Crystal Method caliber groups and DJs, your definately doing something right. Big ups to Bill Pile. See you in January, if not, before then.

Thanks, Jason. Anne is so missed by so many. We can do a lot to honor her memory. Encourage someone. Lead the cheers for a new band. Give a hug. Tell someone how much they rock. Talk to a young person with kindness and honesty. Talk to others about Anne and keep reminding each other that all she did for our community, we can carry on if we want.

I'm so glad I got in on the tail end of the well produced chemicals. Completely changed my life for the better!

Great story about a long standing issue. The approach taken by the Foundation has always resonated more with the KC populace than the Museum project which was compromised by meddling politicians, development interests and an ill-advised national focus. And people have long bickered about who is the caretaker of Parker's legacy which is just sad. The ball is really in the Museum's court to see if jazz organizations in this town can work together or not.

This columnist is a genius.
Bob, I could've stayed up for hours talking to folks who came to the screening about that film. If I hadn't had to go home and write, I probably would've.
