Re: “No Static at All

Mark has great taste in music, and I enjoy his Wednesday offerings. It sounds like he put together quite the rythym section for this show. I'm pretty bummed I had to miss out.

David-I caught you and Charles last Thursday on the local showcase. Nice playlist pal.

Re: “America's Pub is out of Westport

I remember when in the 90s westport had a Modern Liberal Hippy College kid vibe. The shadow was IMHO the BEST club XO was also cool. When America's Pub first opened it was great then they went Hoodrat Gangsta & crime shot up. I hope a New club moves in as long as it's NOT a hiphop/Gangsta club. Personally I would run those offices out & downtown & expand the space into a Megaclub.

Re: “America's Pub is out of Westport

America's Pub was cool until they went Gangsta. The Shadow however was WAY better. Westport use to have a Hippy Party vibe. Then developers closed the mall & put in Offices. Neighborhoods gave way to "Luxury" Apartments. The city needs to zone the westport areaa Shopping/ Entertainment ONLY area bring back the mall or convert it into a mega club & limit the rent to college student level. Let the rich kids move downtown & go to P&L.

Re: “Streetside: Smoked meats and arson at
La Esquina's Speakeasy

Nice article. Makes me want to go there and find out what is happening.

And I'm not artsy or even too cool!

Re: “Streetside: Smoked meats and arson at
La Esquina's Speakeasy

Hey Word Smith,

First, congratulations on the cool Internet name.

Second, this is a nightlife column. We write extensively about the arts in various other sections, which are very easy to find on the Pitch website. For instance, we wrote about the very event I mention in this column right here:

http://www.pitch.com/kansascity/speakeasy-…

Maybe you should "take notes and gather information" about what we do here at the Pitch before you get all worked up and type dumb things in the comments section?

Re: “America's Pub is out of Westport

Bet none of you here are old enough to remember the mid 1980's bar called the HEART-THROB down in west port back in 1986 era. Thats when you could go down there and actually have a night of fun without all the stupid RAP/ HIP-HOP Gangsta B.S. these young degenerate Black Punks are into that totally Ruin everything ! If anybodys noticed, just about every single Venue their involved in has had to be shut down by city officials because of their out of control behavior and Violence, from the bar in Merriam in 2007, to the bar at 435 & bannister to that one club they shut down last fall, to this stupid Americas Pub your all talking about, Don't know whats going on with todays young under 25 Black Youth, but their definetly hanging themselves with their actions, and they seem to want to blame everybody else but themselves and they clearly are NOT responsible for their actions they'll tell ya or have you believe, its somebody else Fault as usual !

Re: “Streetside: Smoked meats and arson at
La Esquina's Speakeasy

This is a very self-indulgent and lackluster review of the happenings on First Friday. Given the title, the article lacks any information (admittedly by the author) about the events he was attending. Why does the Pitch publish articles like this? Where is the substance this city needs in its written publications? Do you need an arts writer that actually attends events, takes notes, gathers information and then publishes an informed account of what occurs in this fantastic city? We are lucky to have a wealth of talented people in the city who could craft an eloquent 500 words, and it should be considered whether or not this writer adds any benefit to the Pitch overall by writing like this.

I don't expect the Pitch to represent the forefront of journalism, but there should be an editor who proofreads writing like this and filters it from being published. This not only makes The Pitch look amateurish, but it also makes Kansas City look bad if someone should happen to find writing like this.

For what it's worth, KCPD was right - there was a string of contractor-style lights left on inside the trailer.

Re: “Streetside: A road trip to Columbia for the True/False Film Fest

Hey Mike in KC,

I saw many great films at the fest as well. But this is a nightlife column, not a film page. You might be more interested in this article, which contains no references to parties or drugs:

David....next time how about focusing on writing about the films as opposed to your juvenile obsession with the parties and drugs. My daughter attends MIZZOU and saw several of the films for one of her classes and actually got something out of them.

Re: “William Elliott Whitmore vs.
the modern world

I love Will! I have seen him 4x in the Chicago area and his shows are always such a good time. He is, in addition to being a great songwriter and singer, one of the warmest most engaging performers I have ever seen. He can just wrap a room around his finger! Can't wait to see him tomorrow!!!

Re: “America's Pub is out of Westport

For the record, saying America's Pub was full of hundreds upon hundreds of black dudes in baggy ass white t-shirts isn't racist. I mean seriously? Are you going to try and suggest America's Pub was a hot hang out for attorneys and well-dressed black men? Because it wasn't.

There's a difference between black people and black trash. Just like there's a difference between white people and white trash. America's Pub was full of black trash. Not black people.

Re: “America's Pub is out of Westport

I've been in KC for a while now. From 97-2002 & then again from 2008 onward. I live less than a mile from the centre of Westport. I go there a lot. I miss Streetside and (still) and countless other spots (Corner Cafe, Reading Reptile) but it's still alive, and it still has character. Foundry and McCoys are both two excellent pubs with great vegetarian food options. Not to mention my visits to Thai Place & Korma Sutra. I'm at Tivoli just about every week for a fine indie film. My wife would be lost without Murry's. I do wish for more density (Record Bar, Boomerang) but hey it's not so bad. The new look of Westport and Main is nice, and hopefully Napoleon's can make a run there along with Oddly Correct. We miss Muddy's and Recycled Sounds, but it's not over. If you think Westport is done for, then you're just not around enough to know better.

Re: “America's Pub is out of Westport

Why are people so afraid of the truth? If the truth hurts... Westport will never regain it's lustre, it's going the way of Bannister Mall.

Re: “America's Pub is out of Westport

Westport used to be so much better and seems to have sort of lost its way. Moved away 16 uears ago and was back in KC over the holidays and the place just seemed so destitute, a bit raggedy and boarded up. Definitely not the much more charming little neighborhood it once was. The Prospect was one of my favorite restaurants, but was replaced with the frat puke Harpo's. Classic Cup had a location on Pennsylvania and served an excellent Sunday brunch. The Corner Restaurant was the place for hangover breakfasts and Manor Square was a mall that never took off before it got converted to movie theaters. Westport needs to throw off its trashy, party image, grow up and come into its own again. Bring back mature establishments, infill the ugly parking lots and let the neighborhood live up to its potential. The drink and puke posers can keep the P & L district.
