Re: “Clay Hughes & the What?

Agree with Mize411.....

I'd like to know what kind of music lester and malone are into. Could explain a lot about who they are.

Re: “Clay Hughes & the What?

Way to put it, Kevinmalone. I couldn't have said it better myself. This band stinks. And I'm sure 3 of the 5 of comments on here is from Clay's sister. EMBARRASSING!

By the way, love you on the Office.

Re: “Clay Hughes & the What?

And what band are you in Kevinmalone? You seem to have such authority regarding this bamd. I was just wondering where you supreme opinion comes from. How long have you been in the music business?

Re: “Clay Hughes & the What?

I completely agree with the writer. This band is awful. I've seen them a couple times around Kansas City over the past 2 years, and it's nothing that anybody should pay for. I received Clay's first EP for free at a show last year, and after reading this, was prompted to listen to the new one online for free. There is no new material. It all sounds the same, just with different lyrics. There is little to no talent in this band. The DJ uses serato, and basically just pushes "play" on a track and adds different sounds here and there. Clay's voice is lacking in talent. He sounds like a 2011 version of Everlast (90's as well).
These guys are about 15 years late for the genre they are trying to promote. Where were they when "She's All That" was in theaters? I think I would like them a little more if they put their talents to use and did a cover of "What It's Like" or "Put Your Lights On".
Save your money, folks. It's much less embarrassing to listen to "Now" CD #'s 1-9 in the comfort of your own home than it is to go out and spend your hard earned cash at a crappy show. If you want 90's music that bad, hit up Sam Goody. Oh, that's right, those stores don't exist anymore, much like this style of music.

Re: “Clay Hughes & the What?

I meant I agreed with Mize411, not the article writer/reviewer.

Re: “Clay Hughes & the What?

Agreed! Original, authentic, high energy and true talent, that is what you get from this band. Not a bunch of screaming boys wearing their 12 year old sisters pants and just doing cover songs. These guys are true musicians who are clearly dedicated to their craft and are not afraid to blaze the trail in collaborating various genres. I for one suggest you and everyone to check out a show.....you will eat your words gladly!

Re: “Clay Hughes & the What?

If by "dated scratching" and "unwelcome '90's nostalgia" you mean a band that can actually play their instruments and sing rather than relying on Auto-Tune and Pro Tools then I agree with those parts of your review. Otherwise, I couldn't disagree more. This band is a breath of fresh air in a town drowning in skinny jeans wearing cookie cutter "indie" look/sound-a-likes. I highly encourage any true music fans to go and see these guys live as soon and as often as you can. With guests sitting in from ThePhantom (MC) to Madison Decamp (on the violin) Clay Hughes and the What? consistently put on some of the best shows in KC.

Thank you Berry for the listen and kind words! The shit is always on the fly, proud to be the monkey that flung it!

Re: “Lazy

Also lazy: Berry Anderson's fact-checking. Lazy was produced by Mike Tulley, not Nathan Reusch.

Re: “The Blos

Original hip-hop with a prog-ish, psychedelic vibe from some cool cats who don't take themselves too seriously. Breath of fresh air from the midwest! I find it perfect to kick back a zone to! I dig it!

Re: “The Grisly Hand

@ c - go give yourself one of those in the mirror! freak. @ reviewer - ha. way to not mention a single song and get the number of tracks wrong. seriously - quit with the namby pamby analogies and review the damned record. is it bullshit or what? what's with this fence sitting? and what does "etsy punk" mean to someone who doesn't know who this band is? and why did you switch from "i" to "we" in the article? the royal we? what are the shorter songs like? bad? what was recorded besides a banjo and harmonies? there is music behind the "polished" recording, right? polished like a britney spears record or polished like you don't know the right word to use? polished like "clean-sounding" or "lacking warmth?" unengaging? boring? link a track or something! and what's an extended harmony? do you mean extensive harmonies? as in overused? or is there like one long harmony throughout the whole record? that sounds killer. i hope it's that! tighten it up, Mermaid.

Re: “The Grisly Hand

why this guy is a writer, I don't know. and why he is a music critic is even more of a mystery. I would urge the Pitch to fire him immediately, since he wouldn't know good music if it slapped him in the ears. boo.
