The University Medical College was in no way affiliated with the University of Missouri or the University of Kansas School of Medicine, but was a privately owned proprietary school run for profit. UMC was the last surviving private medical school in the Kansas City area, but did not go without a fight - it went down several times and gave it's last gasp, I believe, in 1934.

I stumbled across this post while searching for Kansas City Star articles written in 1942. I'm assembling a book about my aunt Olivia O'Brien's life for her 90th birthday. As a Kansas City native she was featured in a Star article on her return from Honolulu in April of '42. She had gone for a two-mnth visit with her brother, Navy Lieutenant Leslie O'Brien the previous October and was there on 07 December. Her comment on returning to Kansas City, published in the Star, was that it was a relief to be back in "safe-old Kansas City" (though she was not to stay long, but answer the U.S. Army's call for women to serve in Tokyo).
Interesting, but not why I write to you. I noted her address listed in the STAR article was 5314 Rockhill Road, perhaps a block away from the site of a grisly murder. So much for safe-old Kansas City.
I enjoyed and thank you for your post. I've learned more about Kansas City than I ever thought to ask, and know now what a vibrant city it was. jb

This article was great and also really struck a chord with me. On my site, On This Day In Fashion, we've actually been answering some of those very questions at the end of your piece, with our "7th Avenue Special" series. We think about this topic a lot! http://onthisdayinfashion.com/...

This is a crappy written article that seemed to be whipped out rather quickly.
I kept reading on only to find more negative remarks, and an odd sense of writing style that left me in a bad mood.
I kept reading on to find a postive remark, but nope.
What was this writer trying to convey?

I vote for Miss Whipple. She looks like she could be on Mad Men. Modern and retro at the same time.

Very nicely done. It's rare that I read every word of most columns these day...interesting and well written from beginning to end. You could write only about interpreting the KC Star in the past and I'd read it. Good job.

Nice rumination on the Sunflower plant. If anyone's curious we have a brief piece about the ordnance works at http://search.jocohistory.org/...
and some historic photos at http://bit.ly/c7PZn1
