Re: “Marv's Original Delicatessen reaches for authenticity in Leawood

I went to Marvs expecting to be dissapointed. I knew there was no way it could match up to a New York Jewish-style deli. However, I left quite surprised. It's still far from a Carnegie or Katz's, but for KC, its a start. Both times I've been there, it hasn't been busy. The pickles they serve are tiny... Like 1/4 per person (Rascal House in Miami would have vats on each table for customers.). Flavors are good, my ruben was good and toasted, but the bottom piece of bread got very soggy very quickly. Mish mash soup was very good, complete with big chunks of chicken. Def worth a try-make tje decision yourself if you love it or not. Or like me- like it until something more authentic comes along.

sorry yours was not grilled enough....but i must tell you our Reuben is on the grill the whole time during the cooking process just like any other Rueben ever made. I do apologize yours was not grilled enough. there is only one way to make a Reuben and that is on the flat top as ours 100% is!!!

Sorry Steve, I know what a grilled sandwich looks and tastes like. I've worked a grill station. If the Reuben sandwich I tasted at Marv's was on a grill and not merely waved over the top, it must have been for a hot second.

We do offer two size sandwiches the standard size of 1/2 pound for $10.50 and a one pound version for $19.00 with a side.

Re: “Marv's Original Delicatessen reaches for authenticity in Leawood

I was afraid people here would either complain about the size of the sandwiches or have sticker shock and never return. I just looked at the Carnegie menu and their sandwiches range from ~$14 to ~$25 (with some outliers). My suggestion would be for them to offer two sizes and let the consumer make the call.

We actually do grill the reubens!! They are in no way shape or form "toasted"

I probably won't even give them a try if they aren't putting a rueben on a griddle-blaspheme! (not to mention there's no chewy crust on the bread-they are dead to me)

Re: “Marv's Original Delicatessen reaches for authenticity in Leawood

I've been there once. Had the pastrami on rye. The meat and bread were good, but the thing was tiny. The waitress (why a deli needs a waitstaff in the first place is beyond me) told us that each sandwich came with 1/2lb of meat. There is not way this had 1/2lb of meat (maybe 1/4lb?). I was still hungry when I finished. When I eat at a "jewish" deli, I want my pastrami or corned beef piled high a la "new york bakery & deli" style.

It was decent, and I will probably go back but will be hoping for a bigger sandwich.

Re: “Aixois Brasserie drafts Gallic charm downtown

You can wait, they just put out a Groupon. Which is usually a sign that they're struggling for business. I like the ambiance of the Brookside location, but the staff makes that place so off putting.

Re: “Hamburger Mary's figures Kansas City's ready for big gay burgers

Well well, such serious comments. I am from the Bay Area and have been to the original and it was great. Once a place does the franchise thing, stuff changes.
I have had a great time every time I have been to the KC Marys, and that's what its about. We are not talking about the Ritz here, so lighten up people! Miles

Re: “Believe the hype: Port Fonda is even better than it was on four wheels

Food was verging on good, service and sound levels needed some fine tuning (less hipsters, more knowledgeable waitstaff please). Once the restaurant gets over itself, I'll return.

Charles, you write so beautifully. You totally nailed the glory of a hit restaurant in its early weeks.

The food is great. When my hearing returns from the incredibly loud music, I will return again with ear plugs
