Re: “White Horse Pub proves that there's nothing bland about British cuisine

@André Uttley A UK pint is in fact 20% larger than a US pint, not 4% smaller

Re: “Drunken Fish nets a sushi hangover

I kind of have to agree with Mr. Reigel and Em...seems kind of a waste to go to a sushi restaurant, whether it is 'fusion' or the real deal and not order some real sushi. Makes me question this guys reasons for critiquing the restaurant. And bravo to you Mr. Reigel, I think its just find to stand up for yourself when some guy is painting you a certain way. Its only fair to get both sides of the story.

Re: “Want some contest-quality barbecue in KCK? Hurry up – you're already late

It's easy to pick up a "to-go" order since Slaps BBQ is a block west of I-70 at Central Avenue. Like most of these popular specialty places, get there early....between 11-a.m. and 11:45 to beat the crowd and get out. The three men who own it want customer feedback about what you like or do not like. That's unusual -- most eateries don't care what the customers thinks. They just want volume. Give it a try -- there's no place else to go for food in that part of town.

I'm not Dotte, but I am indeed a self-proclaimed groupie! Charles failed to mention the hushpuppies, which is my favorite side at Slap's. And the turkey is one of my favorite meats. At other BBQ joints, turkey is merely my "I'm on a diet" standby along with pickles. But at Slaps, it is juicy and flavorful - I love pairing it with the burnt ends on a platter. Yes, the line is out the door, but that's only because the place is so tiny! It usually only takes 5-15 minutes to order your food. I remember when OK Joes line was that short, back when it had "no wait."

Re: “White Horse Pub proves that there's nothing bland about British cuisine

Actually, I think a couple of observations made by reviewers here should be slightly corrected.

1. A 'pint' in the UK is an 'imperial' pint: 20 fluid ounces and not 16 US fluid ounces. A British pint is about 4% smaller than a US pint.

2. Shepherd's Pie is made with lamb; Cottage Pie is made with beef.

Dotte sounds like he's got the inside scoop. You workin' at Slap's or just a groupie?

They need to work on their sauce. It's not good. I usually eat at Hickory Log BBQ

I don't have time for all this waiting in long ass lines for bbq nonsense. OK Joes? Too long a wait. This place? Sounds like a hassle. I'd love some good ribs though.

Re: “Want some contest-quality barbecue in KCK? Hurry up – you're already late

Slaps is the real deal no lie. For those in crackerland suburbia, plan a stop by when you are in the area at the right time. Don't commute in from your cul-de-sac and then cry on the internets when you didn't win your prize.

It's a new business. I believe they are trying to expand their output, also I have heard they are a bit slower on Mondays.

It's worth it. The meat is perfect. The sauce is super sweet, so be conservative with it until you have had a taste.

Oh well, guess you gotta get in line with the other early birds! My favorite place right now -and their burnt ends are to die for, but really, all their offerings are of stellar quality- is Next Year's Winner, up there near Briar Cliff. Trust me, the trek is worth it, and I've eaten at every barbecue joint that's worth a mention in the KC area. I like KC-style barbecue, and NYW gets an "outstanding!" in my book.

Re: “Alex Pope's Preservation Market is reason enough to frequent Bridger's Bottle Shop

The smoked pork loin sandwich is delicious. They seem to have taken sandwiches in general to a new level.

Re: “How do you say 'Beard winner Michael Smith' in Spanish? Cocobolos

C'mon Charles :-(

Love Michael Smith. But paying for chips and salsa is a deal-killer at a Mexican resturant/cantina.

You must have received special treatment because that is the complete opposite experience we had with the food and service was subpar. Reviews on Yelp are mixed and not good ratings as compared to other M.S. establishments.

I'd rather drive to Manhattan and get the Evil Desert Chicken. I'm sure this is good in it's own right, but when I hear Coco Bolos I have too many delicious memories that pop up in my head.

Re: “Nick and Jake's on Main: a location with a curse, a menu with potential, servers with an itch

I worked for Nick &Jake's for 6 years as a manager at their Overland Park location. I will state that Kevin, Doug, Bill and Larry are fine restaurant men, fine owners, fine Dads and fine Kansas City business owners. If there are issues at the new restaurant on Main then those issues will be studied and corrected. Why? Because they are in their stores every day. When I finally get my own bar/restaurant, I hope that I can reach the high bar that these gentlemen have set. You guys are the best! Tom Wynne
