Agreed on all counts. Great food, when it is great.

Also, the chairs and tables are uneven and not too comfortable...but knowing that he made them I suppose I let that slide.

A word of warning about Cinder Block: the beer is good, but if you plan to have conversation with friends, be prepared to shout. The music is WAY too loud.

You haven't had magnificent shrimp and grits until you have the ones from here--the stone-cut grits are the perfect cheesiness, and the shrimp juicy and tail-less, a step up in my mind. Taste perfection is the wonderful sauce which includes chunks of a thick bacon--mouth watering just to think of it!

As a Brazilian born who's been living in the States for 42 years and who's also a long time Kansas City resident, I was very happy and excited to read such a great article about our famous "brigadeiros". Also I'd like to let you all know that we have here in KC a Brazilian owned artisan company who is totally dedicated to exclusively making brigadeiros. They introduced these wonderful and tasty sweet treats back in January of this year at the Party Arty event at the Nelson Atkins Museum, and have participated in some other events around town. They offer 11 different flavors of brigadeiros, and their presentation is outstanding. The name of this company is Sweet Kiss Brigadeiros, and this is the link to their Facebook page

I had probably my worst restaurant experience there in April. It took forever for my party of 3 to get a seat in a room of 3 empty 4 tops, I used to work in service and I get that is sometimes a necessity so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. After we were seated our waiter, who was behind the bar visibly chugging several Red Bulls and a sweaty mess, completely forgot about us, our drinks took almost 45 minutes to come out because they were never rung in. The food was god awful- bland and cold- when we walked out people in the line to get in asked us what we thought, to which we responded "it was awful"...they thought we were joking and stayed in line.

The glass mugs are still there at Mugs Up. Indeed, it's pretty much the same as it was more than 50 years ago.

Didn't know that Clem's and its famous brain sandwiches were gone. I used to go there with my uncle, who always had the brains. I never could work up the courage for that. But it was a landmark, and it's always sad to see those go, although Stack's looks pretty inviting. Less inviting is Mugs Up on 23rd Street, east of Noland. I grew up just a few blocks from there and that's where my dad would take the family for a treat. I don't remember ever eating there, but you could get a large root beer for a dime, a regular for a nickle and a baby mug for free. And you could get a gallon jug or a quart, which came in a cone-shaped paper container and cost 25 cents. The place looks pretty sad these days, and I'm sure they've ditched those cool glass mugs for paper cups. But it brings back a lot of memories. Ah, to be young again....

There is also a Maid-Rite Drive In in Lexington, MO. It has the loose meat sandwich plus also burgers, italian steak, hot dogs and nachos. It does the old fashion milkshakes, sundaes and blizzards. It is showing its age, but still puts out some damn good food.

It is interesting that your comments about the Berliner Baer seem to completely miss it's foundation. Having lived around the corner from it my young life, and celebrated both my sisters and my 21st birthday there. Joel's cooking was very good, with a real old world feel to it. Nettie was a wonderful woman, and my thoughts of her are so very fond. All of this with an old world decor, something so perfectly fitting Waldo, across the street from the former Art Bunker Porsche, where my father bought his only Porsche. With my parents gone, I treasure the memories, the food, the company.. To have but a momentary taste of goulash soup, and rouladen on my tongue again, would truly be heaven. To hear Nettie's voice greet my family once again, we the love and grace that is mostly gone from this world, would, and (the thought) brings tears to my eyes.
