Re: “Do small plates have to be a big annoyance?

Good commentary, Charles. Small plates do have their advantage if I'm not that hungry and want more of a tasting menu than a substantial meal. And as for dim sum - well, I haven't been to ABC but I do manage to make an occasional pig of myself at Bamboo and Pine Garden. Way better than Bo Ling's.

Re: “Rye is in a field by itself

The neighborhood and clientele at the blue stem is disgusting. Across the street from a fucking tattoo parlor for god's sake. It is about time the owner went upscale in JoCo. No more felons lurking in the alley. Leawood is nice with none of the crime, 1% tax or baggage that KCMO is so proud of. No blacks either.

I've always wondered. Now I know. And knowing is half the battle.

Re: “Applewood BBQ works best undressed

OK Charles-At what point in your review does it become code word for "this sucks!"?

I ordered my pulled pork sammy with sauce on the side, and got a sammy drenched in pure sugar, aka their 'sauce'. The beans pretty much amounted to a can of Bush's and a bottle of Log Cabin maple, and half a pound more of brown sugar. (Warn your diabetic friends!)

Girl friends sammy came cold, the pre-frozen fries were limp and soggy, and all that after a 35 minute wait, in a room that had maybe a half dozen occupied tables.

I'm not even going to give them a second chance at turning me in to a diabetic.

L.C.'s, here I come!

Now I want Peanut wings at 8 in the morning. Also, I think the bleu cheese is the hardest part to duplicate, and my favorite thing about the Peanut wings.

Re: “Applewood BBQ works best undressed

I've been to Applewood BBQ several times and it's ok. My standard of excellence for Kansas City barbeque is LC's and Applewood's food isn't at that level yet. The french fries in the picture look like typical fast food frozen potatoes. They're certainly not the fresh-cut fries served at LC's. No ones burnt ends can match LC's either.

Re: “Real Jalisco takes
the Tex out of Mex

This place is awesome. It is pricier than some mexican places but well worth it. Our favorite food in the world right now is their queso fundido appetizer (which we prefer with tomatilla sauce and without chorizo). It's amazing. The chiles en ogada is my favorite dish, but I have never had anything there that wasn't very good.

Re: “Applewood BBQ works best undressed

I worked for this guy when he owned Micheal's BBQ on 24 highway in Independence, at the time he had a sweet and smokey sauce that people could not get enough of. don't know what he is doing different, but maybe he should think of bringing that sauce back. It tasted great on all of the meat and with the fries. Wishing you much luck on your new sauces....

The food is terrific and I've always had great customer service. Try the ribs or the pulled pork sandwich!

Re: “Applewood BBQ works best undressed

My husband and I ordered out from there once and while the food wasn't bad, the second time we went there to eat-in, we did not have a good experience.

After standing at the counter and being completely ignored by the staff, we headed towards the door when one of the employees sarcastically yelled in our direction "Wait. Please don't go." We knew they were talking to us because we were the only other people in the place. We haven't been back since. The food wasn't good enough to put up with shitty service like that.

They are very good. I also learned to get my sauce on the side; I usually mix medium and hot together and then dip my meat in it. Or fries if I'm feeling wacky.

Re: “Applewood BBQ works best undressed

I don't live too terribly far from there. I'll have to give them a try. Pulled pork and roasted corn sounds great!

Apple and hickory has been my signature blend of woods for smoking since I could strike a match. My bone-in chicken breasts come out perfect every time.

Re: “Ryan Brazeal opens his imaginative Novel on the West Side

Listen, I like Charles ferruzza's review and only grab the pitch to read the restaurant review. He's been doing it for yrs, it's always to the point and if he doesn't Ike your restaurant you always know it right away. Who cares about the web site, or whether he goes there or not, or whether he is asking restaurant guests what is good, I like that, it's a good way to pick something out when a place in brand new, when you wait tbls your guests always want a recommendation , and I always want to give them one, a good and yummy one,I think the ones of you that are nit picking Mr Ferruzza's choices of writing style or any of the other snarky comments surely would be a nightmare to wait on and you seem just plain snobs. Just my opinion
