We recently moved to Maryland (and moved back to Lawrence again) and I can attest that the crabcakes at Intorno were as good as the best I ordered in Maryland.
The only word that I can think of for the Ossobuco is heaven on a plate. We have yet to eat a dish that disappoints. Tiramisu and peanut butter pies are divine. Wait staff still need some work - especially at the bar. But over the last few months, the wait staff has improved. Phenomenal place - check it out.
right across the street from the over priced, pretentious Mess-tizo.
Toasted ravioli are Appalachian? That's a new one. Every account I've ever seen or heard says toasted ravioli originated in St. Louiis.
You have sold me on the crab cakes alone and tempting me with the tiramisu-sambuca, huh? May have to check this one out.
Yes it is about time the owner moved his business interests out of the goddamned ghetto... I would never risk my life go to the Blue Stem. Now that he has a respectable address, respectable people will show up. I presume they'll seat poorly dressed patrons and the blacks in the back (or not at all), as is typical at Leawood Town Center.
Hey veggiehead, why don't you refuse to eat and hold your breath until they put a vegetarian dish on the menu????? please please please! then we'll one less self important vegan whining that they can't find restaurants that cater to their every whim......
Well, clearly this review was well received. The silence is deafening.
If you want a legit gastropub, and a template for something that works...look into the offerings from chicago: Longman & Eagle, Owen and Engine, The Gage
I can attest to the fact that Fanni Jo's Fried Chicken is wonderful! I had this on a Saturday and based on this we invited friends to a Friday dinner. Woodsweather II is all it is talked up to be. Everything I have tried here is great. One of the best restaurants in the Northland.
On my second visit my friends had the boiled shrimp. We were pleasantly surprised as they have Karaoke here on Friday night. We intended to stay for a little while and ended up staying for three more hours.
I don't know where they get these singers but they were all fantastic! They told me it was open mic karaoke but you could have fooled me. All the singers were off the hook. Our server told us that this is the specialty of the Karaoke Company but I have never heard such great Karaoke singers! We were going to leave by 10 pm and stayed till 1 am. Many of the singers would take requests if you asked them. This was one of the most entertaining nights my husband and I have had out in a long time.
We will definitely be back!
I'm dying to try this place, but I'm not satisfied with their excuse of not having enough fresh vegetables to offer at least one vegetarian entree. I'm a vegetarian, and even in the dead of winter, I manage to cook pretty amazing food. I guess I'll wait until summer to give this place a try.
like i need approval to drink or eat alone at a bar .....from no less than a pissant Pitch writer. give me a break
I'm always amazed when I go out to dinner on Valentine's Day or New Year's Eve and it isn't the best meal of my entire life. I wish there was a way for restaurants to coordinate one of those holidays with the last night of their Groupon AND Restaurant Week because it would give tedious Yelpers ammo out the ass.
I reserved a table for my other half and myself on Valentines Day. We ordered the cured meat appetizer and the goat cheese appetizer. The goat cheese was fantastic (goat cheese with the addition of cream cheese.. not entirely creative). The cured meat appetizer was ok.... the included house made pickles were good. She ordered the chicken fried steak and gravy.... Not impressed at all. Somewhat greasy and their effort to make the gravy so non-traditional resulted in just that.... the gravy had an odd flavor and I wasn't all about it. I ordered the shrimp and grits... this was a fantastic combination. The grits were cooked perfectly! The shrimp were small and cooked to the consistency of rubber. (I was most surprised by this simple mistake). We ordered the blood orange/chocolate tart and the banana cream pie. The banana cream was great (but not comparable to the banana cream from the cigarette smoke inundated dive diner in Riverside) and the blood orange tart was good, but not exactly memorable. This is my advice. If you want to try Rye, go to the Blue Stem and order from the happy hour menu on the lounge side. It is Rye's menu, but done SO much better! I'm not sure why. If you want to dine on sub-par, uber-creative, expensive dishes while sitting next to a eccentric psychiatrist in a beanie, then go to Rye. For the record, I am a HUGE fan of Bluestem.
Charles is such a fantastic, creative and talented writer. I love his restaurant reviews as well as his wit!
He is the BEST!!!
Move over, MFK Fischer. Feruzza deserves a spot on the pantheon, too. Marvelous essay.
charlie is so much my favurite writer on this magazine, to bad he doesnt drink no more, otherwise i buy him 50 rounds of jager bombs in vegas!! joke about tucker carlson soo funny!! i spit jagerbomb all over computer screen! one time i meet mr tucker carlson and he tell me woman should never drive car because they are not humanbeings, he is evil man. then i see tucker carlson turn another man into a rock just by looking at him, devil inside FOR SURE, why they let evil person on television. i vote charlie for tv host!!!
Leawood is NOT low rent. It is well educated, upscale, 97% white & priced to keep it that way. The location is solid!
Hi Charles. You mention the chicken @ Rye's is hormone/anti-biotic free (this is not unique, by-the-way, as all chicken is mandated to be by federal law) but do you know the source of the beef they serve? I didn't see it mentioned in your article if the beef is clean.
Re: “Pig & Finch tries to take wing in Leawood”
How do you have a job? The fact that you compare braised snails to bruschetta shows how little you actually know about food. It is blatantly obvious that you have something against pig and finch from your two horrific articles, which you try to pass off as legitimate reviews. Maybe you should look up the definition of the word review and drop all your flowery writing. The only thing I found useful from your articles is the secret love affair you have with Rye. Which is a completely different concept. Didn't your mother teach you not to compare and contrast opposites? I think you missed that in English 101... Possibly. Pig and Finch has across the board ratings of 4 plus stars on all media sites. As a loyal .customer I am appalled at your attack on the now local owned monopoly chain. You should probably keep your refined taste and opinion to that of McDonald's Mr. Feruzza because you wouldn't know a good food if it rained down on you.
