Re: “Dimming Star: Things just get less and less bright at the city's shrinking daily paper

Hilarious article!

It's just plain hilarious. The Pitch can talk crap all it wants about the Star and the Star has to print it. Contracts and all you know.

The Star has lost most of it's really good talent in every department and is finding it rough going trying to replace the years of experience and expertise that it kicked to the curb because anyone with half a brain wouldn't put up with the crap that they give you. Substandard pay. No pay raises, but increased hours. Forced unpaid time off and to top it all off, Alice-In-Wonderland management promotions that blew through the Peter Principle like that axiom didn't exist.

I feel real sorry for all those folks still there who busted their butts all these years only to be forced to stand under the shit dumper every day because they got bills to pay and they can't just quit and move to another newspaper.

Remember back in day when the Star called the shots on ad revenue in this town and was making 100x more cash than Tony Montana? Wow, it was great. The Star was basically printing money. Well, in the modern remake of Scarface, Tony died in the end.

The only question left is will the Star be attacked by outsider forces climbing over their walls or will they implode from within due to those outside forces. For the Pitch's sake, they better hope the Star stays standing. Can't wait to see what happens when the Pitch's contract with the Star comes up for renewal.

Re: “Dimming Star: Things just get less and less bright at the city's shrinking daily paper

I'm the type that likes to read the hard copy of newspapers and I had a subscription to the Star for years, but the race baiting and hate mongering got to be too much and the Pitch is no different. Notice how the reporter pointed out the race and gender of Vahe Gregorion, but didn't mention the race or gender of his wife? Typical liberal bigotry.

Re: “Kansas City 2020: Part II

I've lived in KC for 50 years, and I've watched a lotta Foreign out of town Crooks blow into town and blow a lotta Smoke up the "NAIVE" & "Clueless" local Politicians and local Naïve Reporters backside with great Fan Fare !!

They Blow into Town with all these Fancy Illusions and Fantasies, and Fancy Illusionary Graphs and Charts and see just how Naïve many of those that reside on City Council's across the Metro, just Eat up their Illusionary Bullshit, like kids eating Candy !!

Then when it comes time to really get down,, they want all kinds of TIF Financing, Property Tax Reductions, Fancy Studies they expect the City to pay for / Tax Payers really, and all kinds of other ridlicious BS.

They promise all kinds of Illusionary Big Time SALES TAX "Revenues" from their Fantasy Businesses, and how they'll Supposedly Employ the citizens of the area.

only problem those Jobs are "Part-Time" - "Low Wage" No Benefits what so ever type jobs, but, hey their Jobs, so it Sounds Good, that's all that matters !

Then just like the Great Mall of America, which as I recall, when it was being built was supposedly going to be the Greatest Shopping Mall in the Midwest as it was Touted, on the news and in news papers.

Ya, well we see what it became - Right !

Then the Former Mission Mall Site, and all that illusionary BS, my how city officials fell for all that Shuck & Jive at those council meetings - hook line & sinker !!

Then there was the I-35 & 67th Street Mall that never happened on the West Side at the former General Electric building,, sat vacant for years

But you should of seen all the beautiful Fancy Graphs, and charts and paintings / renderings they were pitching at City Council members who were all starry eyed at the Supposedly Big Time Sales Tax Revenue they were going to see,,,,

Well,,, they seen it alright Zero - Zip - Zilch - Nothing - Notta !!!

Too many of those that reside on City Council Boards are wayyy too Over Eager and Overly Positive, and let these Foreigner outta towner Phony Business Goofs come in and blow smoke up their back sides time & time again repeatedly, only to find out they been had.

Remember the Big Fiasco in overland park over the SPRINT Center in the mid 1990's ??

how many People did they LAY -OFF ??? repeatedly constantly and the loss in Revenue to the city when they moved out East only to move back again few years later, remember that fiasco !!

Those BS Corporate Executive Foreigners, blow into to town and see how NAIVE and asleep at the wheel Native Kansas Citians are and basically have a full blown Circus with us, like Snake Oil salesman, telling us anything because it sounds good, they'll attempt to sell you an OIL Painting, only to find out its a WATERCOLOR Painting instead, by then its too late, we've been sucker'd and left holding whatever they dumped on us !

Notice thru the years lotta those BS Artists are from the East Coast & upper North East part of the country where they often get by with those kinds of Shannigans and Phony Fraudulent Schemes, usually if anything happens at all, they've Swindled lots of Money out of their Investors pockets ,to supposedly invest in their phony grand scheme that'll never come to be.

Ohhhh but their with a Big Time Development Company that manages all kinds of properties so, they must be successful - right ????

Strange lotta of those supposedly Big Time Development companies were near Bankruptcy while & before attempting to Build some of these New Shopping attractions and after Bankruptcy, changed the name of the company and or Sold out to another Development company to Bail themselves out of the JAM they got themselves into with their phony HYPE & BS & poor management style !!!

Native Kansas Citians are great people, hard working type people mostly Blue Collar workers, but WE / they don't deserve to be lied to, taken advantage of, made a fool out of, or see their Communities ruined by Big Corporate East Coast Mentality Schysters and Con Artists , doesn't matter how nice their Dressed !!!

Were too easily taken advantage of with our Naiveness and all to willingness to believe anything that Schyster dressed up in his fancy suit tie is telling us about their Illusions & Fantasies that will come back and bite everybody in the keister sooner than later !!

I don't wanna see Kansas City like Chicago, or New York, or Los Angeles, those cities are a Disaster, for those that like that - move there then !!

Kansas City has kinda become a Transient Gateway for Corporate America, who've blown into town for a few years then move out, and bringing people from all over with it, and taking them away, some stay some don't.

Way too much Corporate Retail space in this town for what it is, you can drive anywhere and see Former Retail this and Former retail that, sitting vacant for sale or lease.

Kansas City needs more locally Native Home Grown type Retail and Businesses, NOT these here today Gone Tomorrow Corporate establishments that once were with their boarded up vacant structures they've planted all over everywhere.

Re: “Dimming Star: Things just get less and less bright at the city's shrinking daily paper

Haaaa, well when are WE going to start in on the local TV News stations ????

Their getting pathetic as well, and especially, their here today, gone tomorrow Reporters and News Anchors.

anymore, you never know who's going to be anchoring the Local news, or who the reporters are !

Local TV News wasn't always like this tho ~ !!!

There actually was a time when you knew who the Local News Anchors were, and who the actual News Reporters were for years / Decades !

NOT anymore, the Local TV News stations change Anchors & reporters like a Baby changing their Diapers, constantly !!

The last 5 to 10 years they thrive on Churning over the News Anchor Teams and reporters, constant employee Turn over !!!

I remember the days of Wendall Anchutz and ANN Peterson,,, then there was weather man Dan Henry on WDAF 4 TV, and the News Anchors on CH 9, and even Charles gray and many others, who were long time Anchors & reporters for decades.

Now days, I don't even know the names of any of these Anchors & Reporters, and about the time you learn their names, their Gone , replaced by another "Talking Head", whoever, and then within a few months, their Gone, replaced with yet another Talking Head.

I rarely even watch local TV News anymore its so badd, all of em,

KCTV5

WDAF TV Ch4

KMBC TV Ch9

Their all Badd anymore, and who knows who the reporters are or News Anchors anymore ???

Re: “Dimming Star: Things just get less and less bright at the city's shrinking daily paper

I remember when the star had more substance and far less advertising clutter. Their website is no different. Their oped lineup is so far to the left and out of touch with reality sometimes. It used to be a paper for all the people.

They have done some good stories dont get me wrong. Its just not worth spending money on it when there is so much else out there. Maybe if it was more balanced.

Re: “Dimming Star: Things just get less and less bright at the city's shrinking daily paper

Sorry, I think The Star does a great job and is doing much better than most papers. I find if you aren't complaining about the paper you are complaining about the city. You need to look a little closer to what you have.

Re: “Dimming Star: Things just get less and less bright at the city's shrinking daily paper

If you found this article boring, you don't know a good story when you see one.

Congratulations to the Pitch and David Hudnall, who researched the subject thoroughly and did an excellent job of not only recounting what has been going on in the newsroom but also explaining the financial side of the newspaper business and reviewing emerging journalistic models, such as the St. Louis Beacon. Very interesting.

P.S. I'm sorry, in a way, that I had the only four-letter-word quote in the story ("How the fuck am I going to get out of here?"), but I was rambling along pretty loosely, with no personal editing going on...That's the mark of a good reporter, too -- one who can get a subject talking freely.

Re: “Dimming Star: Things just get less and less bright at the city's shrinking daily paper

it's obvious to me now, how can the Star compete? They were beat to the punch by the Pitch (a free rag) on the biggest story of the week ....the Cronut Spotting.

Definitely too long and boring to read the whole thing. Was yawning after the first page. Don't need an umpteen page read to tell me what I already know. It can be summed up in four words. The star is crap.

Re: “Dimming Star: Things just get less and less bright at the city's shrinking daily paper

I can't believe that Jenee has a job at all. She is a joke and an embarrassment. I'm glad Karen Dillon landed on her feet, though.

Anyway, stopped reading it a few years ago, when it seemed to have become more sports coverage than anything. I don't care much either way, but it seemed like all of the headlines were sports-related, and not about crime or city government or education or current local events and people or actual important, pressing issues of the day. Sports isn't important. I know people enjoy watching them and that's fine of course, but sports are an amusement, a distraction, or entertainment----but not news.

Re: “Amit Raizada, local payday profiteer, takes his talents to South Beach and gets sued

Poolboy Pat,

You've solved the riddle. Everyone in Leawood and Mission Hills owns a payday loan shop and everyone in KC Mo, KCK and Roeland Park borrows from them. Now get back to cleaning my pool I'm paying you by the hour.

Re: “Dimming Star: Things just get less and less bright at the city's shrinking daily paper

What about their building? Think how many more reporters they could afford if they sold that off and moved to a vacant warehouse in west bottoms. Surely the property taxes and utilities (with all that glass!) have got to be killing them. That seems to rival the free Internet as one of the biggest mistakes of their past.

Re: “Dimming Star: Things just get less and less bright at the city's shrinking daily paper

Hudnall kills it again, and I loved the fluff shout out to jenee osterheldt's bogus work at the Star. Amazing that the Star's parent company would even bother to print the Ink freebie each week, but it's chock full of ads so the fluff is necessary to fill it out.

However, one might wonder what similar questions we could ask about the Pitch as well. The music section is basically one person now, which pales in comparison to the coverage many of us grew up reading.

Re: “Dimming Star: Things just get less and less bright at the city's shrinking daily paper

why doesn't the Star just merge with The Call. They basically have the same slanted view of everything and share the same Opinion editors. Think of the savings they could generate - why they'd be more profitable overnight!

Re: “Dimming Star: Things just get less and less bright at the city's shrinking daily paper

I would agree with concerned: I think that if the Star would become non-profit, maybe a foundation, it could do very well. There is a need for news that is local and regional - take a look at the Lawrence Journal-World, for example, which is a highly creative paper. The same could be done with the Star, especially if it were non-profit.

A lot of the people who are posted here are more concerned about profits instead of journalism, in my opinion. And I completely disagree with taco2007's comment - that only idiots remain in journalism. That is not true at all. Some of the best minds are in journalism, in papers throughout the country.

If papers were to advertise with local coupons, etc., there would also be much more interest. I get google ads for places and areas I never will go to - they need to get back to local advertising, with attractive ads and videos, and dump google.
