Re: “That new new Westport: A party district grows up

Puuuuhlease.....enough with the non-stop racisim comments. Everyone has really grown tired of it. Actually try articulating an argument without the need for using that word, makes you appear more intelligent.

Re: “That new new Westport: A party district grows up

@hate you, @riverride42: I absolutely agree. Why the author thought it would be appropriate to write that section with racial undertones is beyond me, and placing this section at the beginning sets the rest of the article up as not just a story about the recent developmental and economic success of Westport, but also a celebration of gentrification. The author could have easily wrote the bit about America's Pub differently, and that's why some people commenting here are being critical of the way the author chose to make those racialized connections.

Re: “That new new Westport: A party district grows up

@ Hate You- Yep, my thoughts exactly. And the people who disliked your status are probably white folk who think they are not racist because they are "color blind" (which in its self is a form of racial privilege) or don't see the connection because coded language/narratives don't register as racism because it is not overt.

@hate you - Disgusting? Maybe, but it's the absolute indisputable truth.

Wow, just wow. "One suspects that 2 Chainz will not be a mainstay of the loudspeakers here."

This connection between black culture with violence in Westport in the early 00's (and more importantly, it's expulsion from the area with the peace and 'maturity' of predominately white gentrification) is disgusting.

Re: “That new new Westport: A party district grows up

@a_beer_bar?:
What you claim will happen will not happen. Just like Bier Station, the bottle shop will focus on local food/beer pairings and will aim toward a different crowd. Tap prices will encourage people to stay in the bar rather than buy a bottle and smash it on the sidewalk. We're talking premium clients who are willing to pay extra cash for an experience, not grab-bag prices aimed at drunks.

Exciting article to read. Really makes me want to go out for some good food and drink in Weatport. So many new places to try.

Re: “That new new Westport: A party district grows up

The city needs to step-in and provide some better basic services. I was down in Westport this past Saturday and in many places the street lighting is poor. There is also the need for more automated electronic cross-walks as I saw several pedestrians almost nailed by oncoming speeding cars with no desire to yield to someone in the middle of the street. Someone will be hit and killed very soon.

Re: “That new new Westport: A party district grows up

Great article David.

I like how the changes in Westport have happened somewhat organically - no master plan put in place by some out of town developer. This is all being done by established restauranteurs who love KC and have more than a financial stake in its success.

Re: “That new new Westport: A party district grows up

A bar that sells bottles to go in Westport? Not such a good idea...here is what WILL happen....within a month or so the people running this beer bar will be in the media when the drunks left in Westport after 10 pm take those bottles, drink on the street and throw the empties everywhere...besides World Market has a great selection of beers by the bottle and I will bet cheaper

Re: “That new new Westport: A party district grows up

Thats a nice write, David.

Westport has been my favorite part of town through thick and thin. It really is THE place to hear good local music. All the great eats are just a bonus, and in the past few years, I have noticed Westport teeming with crowds (well-behaved, for the most part) on really nice days.

Seeing healthy growth around always puts me in a cheery mood!
