We had a great time when we were at Garment House. I loved not having to pay for cocktails once I was in. Their drink list was surprisingly fun and delicious as well...and I am thankful for the effort to keep out the "douche-bags" LOL
Cool spot, but if you hire Ashton Martin to spin you are going to attract the P&L douche crowd. It's inevitable.
A perfect ambiance. I have been several times now, and have always had a great time. The staff is on point, and whether there are 30 or 200 people there, the vibe is classy. I think that's what he (Jonas) is going for with the membership concept.
I was afraid this place would be a pretentious suck fest full of recent college dropouts living off their trust funds in Quality Hill.
But if his goal is to only keep the affliction wearing, bro-are-you-looking-at-my-girlfriend, roid raging P&L trash, then I was completely wrong, and good on him.
This place looks very cool, and 40 dollars is not much if you think about a nice drinking night where you put down 6-7 high end cocktails.
I like that it's not for the P&L crowd as well, this is the bar KC deserves.
See! Look what happens when a decent band releases an album in Kansas City.
Nothing.
Errata/correction/clarification: As fans of the band (and the author of this piece) already know, Jared and Coady aren't "billed as Big Business" but playing in their other band Big Business. -- S. R-K.
My band spent a short time sharing a tour with Soul Coughing. There's no way I could know all the inner workings and dynamics of their band, but the Mike Doughty of 2012 seems to never have even met the M. Doughty of 1998.
Hey Mike, here's a psychology term you might want to do some research on: PROJECTION.
Good interview. I can't wait for the show tomorrow night!
I would probably hate Mike Doughty's guts too if I was in a band with him. What a loser. To hear him slag off his former bandmates in such a way shows that he still hasn’t taken responsibility for his actions or resolved any of his borderline personality issues. That’s great that he’s no longer a crack head, but he’s still a delusional/arrogant asshole (and a lucky one at that).
To think he wanted to take all the credit for the Soul Coughing sound/songs is pretty ridiculous. Writing a simple guitar riff and putting some nonsensical words to it does not warrant getting complete credit for a band’s sound/songs. Gee, do you think the guy with the Masters degree in composition from the Mannes College of Music had anything to do with it? (Mark degli Antoni, keyboardist/sampler) or the other guys who had been playing for 10 years before they even met this clown with a cool voice?
It’s pretty obvious from listening to his solo mediocre coffee shop pop that Soul Coughing was a collective sound and his personality/rampant drug use made him more of a liability than an asset to the band.
It's so great that this article gets the other side of the story. It's pretty clear who the asshole is.
From the backyard to The Barnyard, Mike and Heath continue to make great beer and provide great music for all thier friends...and soon to be friends (thats you). Stop by and sample a Rooster Red, or one of Heath's other fine brews, while you catch show. No Show going on...stop by anyway. The beer is still on tap.
Cheers!
i have followed this open mic for years at different venues. no cover and good music makes mudstomp mondays hard to beat. as for kansas bluegrass, there are many original styles of kansas bluegrass other than the rock infused split lip rayfield variety. these styles take stage every open mic and keep it interesting.
Oops -- noted, thank you.
I have watched this project from conception. The brewmasters, bartenders, FOH techs, musicians, and friends have clearly shown dedication to this venue and perfectly good reason to party on a Monday night. Kansas bluegrass as well as Barnyard Beer are here to stay. Rock Chalk.
The "Quixotic girls" are actually members of Burlesque Downtown Underground. www.kcburlesque.com
The Barnyard Brewery is growing fast and catching the eyes of people. They have some of the best drink specials in town with no door cover on Monday nights and sometimes even good food. Keep your eyes peeled for Blue Collar Bar B Que a pint of Barnyards finest brews some good looking Barnyard Servers and some of the best damn music in the Mid West.
Barnyard is rapidly establishing itself as an indispensable member of the acoustic music community. They need our support! Keeping alive the tradition of American folk music by providing a venue for budding musicians is extremely important…and it’s also just a great place to grab a brew (the Porter is my favorite!)

this is what i hate about newspaper stories - i was friends with the Scroatbelly boys but I WAS NEVER A SCROATBELLY MEMBER - could you please correct this? thanks, mike helvey
Thanks to the Pitch for keeping up with the little guys! Come and see us Mondays in the stage room for open mic or you can visit us at the newly remodeled Pool Room, open everyday at 2pm.
Re: “Music Forecast September 27-October 3”
I disagree with Hudnall's opinion of The Doors. Sure Morrison is overrated as a "poet" but Krieger and Densmore were/are talented musicians.
