Re: “The Drop serves lite versions of Lehane, Gandolfini and Hardy

The above poster has once again proved to me that opinions are like belly buttons and another, less metaphysically transcendent body part: everybody has one. I never watched a single minute of The Sopranos, never saw Thomas Hardy in any other film and still feel no inclination to genuflect at the mention of Dennis Lehane. And, I'm not a film critic...amateur or professional.
But, my girlfriend and I talked about this film for two days after we saw it in September. We couldn't wait until The Drop was available on disc. My copy arrived yesterday afternoon and was in the Blu-ray player last night. Nothing at all was lost in the four months since I experienced The Drop in the theater. I'll be watching it again when my sweetie comes to visit in early March.
My belly button thinks that this is a richly nuanced film with great characters. Like The Station Agent with a severed arm tossed in.

Re: “Parents of child who lost fingers in ferret attack say they're broke

I am not really sure what everyone's talking about ferrets have to work really hard to break the skin. I just got 2 ferrets from someone & they got out the travel cage while I was finishing up the main one. I went to pick up the second one & I let him come to me playfully & he rolled over seems friendly. I slowly & genitally lifted him then bam in a blink of the eye he latched onto my wrist repositioned latched again & held on. I scruff-ed him after I realized he had no intentions of letting go & we heard him pop his teeth though the bottom of my skin to the meat. My husband had to pry him off & well now I dont feel very confident about them. I read everyone saying they dont bite & I got 5 holes in my wrist trying to google some info to see what to expect and do.

Re: “At last, Boulevard Brewing Co. plans to start offering select beer in cans

It will be nice to take some cans of Boulevard to the pool so we dont risk bottles breaking and having insanely sharp shards of glass from broken bottles jammed in people's feet causing them to bleed profusely all over the concrete.

Re: “At last, Boulevard Brewing Co. plans to start offering select beer in cans

I've heard McDonald reject the idea of canning his beer on at least one occasion, and it seems that I've read that, too. I'm glad to see he's changed his mind. Or maybe InBev changed it for him. Floating the North Fork of The White River is going to be much tastier this summer.

Re: “You are now free to flash your headlights at other drivers to warn them about police speed traps in Grain Valley

The idea that cops will accept or abide by any sort of restrictions on their behavior is painfully naive. As the recent NYC insubordination festival clearly shows, they do what they want when they want. They'll just find some other excuse for harassing anyone who does something they don't like, legal or not.

Re: “Restaurant Week: four more nights, lots of choices

It's a charity event to raise money. It's going to be more expensive to cover cost and have funds to go to the 3 organizations listed.

Wonder if they are installing their own canning line. Or are they contracting the canning to another beverage maker?

Re: “Two ultra-small startups duel to sell ultrafast broadband to Lawrence

Mike Bosch here. Decided to add my 2 cents for what it's worth.

1. This is simply a political smear campaign. An objective reader will quickly realize that RG Fiber has put Wicked's Fiber request for corporate welfare in jeopardy. To know more, please read this article: http://cadrelawrence.com/fiber-in-lawrence/ and this one http://www2.ljworld.com/weblogs/town_talk/2015/jan/22/commissioners-concerned-about-e-mail-fro/

2. I did not violate any terms with Apple, Inc.. In fact, iCafe never had a contract with Apple, Inc. iCafe provided the labor for MacXprts, which had the rights to sell Apple's awesome computers and provide in-warranty service, better known as AppleCare. All inventory and work related to MacXprts had to be input into MacXprts' point of sale system. Any additional services (read out of warranty work) could be billed through MacXprts for a percentage of the gross revenue.

In 2009, I chose to open the location next to AT&T store on 23rd St to gain the visibility to the increasing number of iPhone users with PCs. The iPhone was the "gateway drug" for many Mac users today. In doing so, I realized that no one was repairing iPhones in Lawrence. So I setup an out-of-warranty iPhone service that did not run through MacXprts. MacXprts wanted in on the action but didn't know how to get into the game. At that time, the iPhone repair business was in it's infancy. I refused to simply give away our vendors and processes for free. MacXprts threatened to pull our ability to sell and provide in-warranty service to Apple computers. That's when Cindy changed the locks.

3. Dave Greenbaum ("Dr Dave") & Brian Best ("Best Macs") requested that iCafe refer all out of warranty work to them for free. Every small retailer knows that your rent is often your biggest advertising. I didn't agree with giving away business that discovered us because of our location.

4. Cindy Bracker's latest version of the "facts" doesn't jive with publicly available documents. Rather than refute point by point, I'll simply point to this link (https://www.kansas.gov/bess/) where anyone interested can search for iCafe and view the 2009 Annual report. You'll find that the report was signed by Cindy and clearly shows that she did not have the 51% claimed here.

5. More publicly available facts at the same link (https://www.kansas.gov/bess/). This time you can search for Dawn Fiber and discover what I was shocked to discover about 7 months into that venture. Pursuant to our out of court settlement, I will not disclose any other details.

Re: “Mission City Council turns the screws on Mission Gateway developer, tacks on a $12 million assessment on undeveloped property

Eddie Pole,

Sorry to just jump in, but I think Roeland Park and its residents have every reason to be concerned about Mission Gateway.

You're right about one thing: It's not perfect in Roeland Park, and part of that is because of the effect Gateway could have on its neighboring city.

Thanks for reading,

Steve

Re: “Char Bar Smoked Meats & Amusements is killing it in Westport

Haven't been here yet, but excited to try it. So much of the credit goes to the chef Jeremy Tawney, who is a super talented and inventive chef. Glad the owners are letting him do his thing.

Higher prices at BBQ joints seems to be the new standard. Ate at Q39 last week and for a sandwich, fries and 2 beers it was $30 (great food, though). The server asked us "Have you guys been to Char Bar? I hear the service is terrible but the burnt ends are good." I thought it was odd that an employee there was trash-talking another spot. Almost liked he'd been told to do so. A little cue rivalry, perhaps?

Re: “Mission City Council turns the screws on Mission Gateway developer, tacks on a $12 million assessment on undeveloped property

I fully support the actions of our Mission City Council. Indeed, after learning what our City Administrator, Laura Smith, had to say about his being "late" on his current property tax bill and the suit with non-payment of Project Engineer, I am stunned that he has the considerable funds needed to be represented by his Polsinelli lawyer, Korb Maxwell.

Eminent Domain?!

Re: “Mission City Council turns the screws on Mission Gateway developer, tacks on a $12 million assessment on undeveloped property

@John Martin-It's people like you that are part of the problem. People who don't live in Mission should just bud out! Just take your pit bull to R-Park and chew old tires into mulch. It's certainly not perfect in little Roeland Park, either.
