Re: “The Des Moines arcade Up-Down is set to replace Hamburger Mary's

Mortal "Combat"? Killer "Instincts"? Do some googling before going to print.

Re: “How Christian churches are changing Kansas City's cultural landscape

Christianity never left the city, so these people are not bringing Christianity back. Let's be real- they're bringing back a White, Evangelical, Middle
Class landscape. This is still a huge part of gentrification. Where and how do these "cultural areas" support and live alongside the communities already living and present there? If these places are so open, where is their outreach to people of color, immigrants, refugees and those living under the poverty line? Maybe it's because at the end of the day these places are businesses, the end, and not cultural communities or indexes for Kansas City. By having these churches and factions buy up real estate, they don't pay taxes which in turn hurts the communities they are residing in. White flight in the '50s may have created a vacuum under racist circumstances, but it allowed the poor, artists, queers and POC to somewhat create a space that allows them to breathe and live somewhat without judgement or persecution. With the suburbanites coming back, with their Bibles in hand and gross ignorance of verses, they are making fast and easy money on trends. A business cannot be "Christian"; businesses are amoral, not moral or immoral. Business owners can be Christian, but at the end of the day, it's about that $. I won't be convinced until I see outreach to the East of Troost and truly unbiased and persecution free work done. And what ticks me off the most is there is no mention of the Orthodox priest and community that works on Troost actively to do good and provide real services to people. St. Mary's of Egypt has done so much and has gotten so little in recognition, especially Father Paisius while he worked there.

Re: “Former employees say Missouri Department of Transportation leaders preyed on older workers

I am a former transportation engineer here in the KC area. I spent years fighting the ignorance and bureaucracy that exists at MoDOT. The level of incompetence and arrogance that exists is beyond anything I've ever come across before. Their entire system from top to bottom is based on the idea that they not be culpable for anything at any level. Roadway and bridge designs are governed more by the idea of avoiding potential lawsuits rather than by sound engineering judgement. The collapse of the Grandview Triangle MSE wall in 2010 is the perfect example. There was an engineering mistake made, the wall and roadway failed, a quick fix was needed, and the company that was responsible for the initial failed design was hired to design the repairs. They were lucky that the collapse happened in the opposite direction of rush hour traffic on a Friday afternoon. If this had happened eight hours earlier, there would have certainly been fatalities. I fear that another such engineering disaster is looming in Missouri. The infrastructure is beyond repair in many areas yet the money needed to fix it is being funneled into lawsuit settlements and lining the pockets of the corrupt.

Re: “Sampling Taco Bell's Sriracha menu — without alcohol

Sustainably Unsustainable, what is your go-to restaurant for good food and drink? Seems like the busiest restaurants are often the most 'hipster'. Just wondering

"Kevin Cawley, the founding pastor at Redeemer, said he found Jesus while smoking a cigarette outside an Applebee's in Grandview."

Talk about rock bottom...

Re: “At last, a compromise in the works to cut down on illegal dumping at Cliff Drive

The byway is closed to cars each night and from 2 p.m. on Fridays until 8 a.m. Mondays. So yeah, the dumping problem is still bad.

Re: “Sampling Taco Bell's Sriracha menu — without alcohol

There is so much good food out there, why would anyone eat Taco Bell if anything else was open?

This sounds like a lot of fun. Unfortunately, they planned the first event on the one Thursday the Chiefs are playing all season, so I assume attendance will be somewhat depressed.

Just close it at night, and then get back to us on how bad the dumping is.
