Re: “Best French Fries

They are delicious! And the truffle fries at Blanc are incredible too.

My favorite French Fries in town though are the Pomme Frites at Aixois (especially when paired with the peppercorn sauce covered hanger steak!) :-)

Re: “Best Doughnuts

Nailed this one! Best of the best!

I also like Jack's donuts in Independence. They are greasy as all get out, but so good! (not as good as Lamar's though...)

Re: “Best Dessert

I miss the chocolate dessert bar at the Peppercorn Duck Club... :'(

Re: “Best Cupcakes

I've tried all three, and they are good.

One little known one, though, that is better than all of the above is Cuppity Cupcakes. They are by order only (they don't have a storefront), and can be done by going to their website www.cuppity.com. They will often post specials on their Facebook page and Twitter feed. All of their cupcakes are filled and are delicious!

Re: “Best Caterer

Never heard of them. I'll have to try them some time.

Best caterer as far as I'm concerned is Authentic Cravings, owned by Yvette and Julian Calderas. I used them for several years when I had to cater meals for a previous employer. They were reliable, the food was delicious, and their pricing structure was very fair. www.authenticcravings.com

Re: “Best Barbecue

Great choices for best BBQ. My favorite though, as stated on other posts, is Porky's Blazin' BBQ. I can understand why it doesn't make the list. It's hidden out in the country south of Grain Valley, but it's well worth the drive. They're only open on the weekends, and you better get there early because they might run out of your favorite meat. Also, you'd better bring cash - no credit cards accepted...

Two other great, out of the way BBQ joint that certainly deserve honorable mentions are:

1. We-B-Smokin' at the Miami County airport out in the country between Paola and Osawatomie. Their brisket is to die for! It's certainly a unique experience around lunch time most days because a lot of small planes fly in just for lunch. There's parking for airplanes on one side of the restaurant, and parking for cars on the other. There are often as many planes there for lunch as there are cars. Very cool place filled with a lot of really cool Kansas City Chiefs decor.

2. Smokey's BBQ in Wellsville, KS, takes you back in time when you walk in their small, very old, brick storefront building on the main. The old hardwood floors might creak a little when you walk on them, but the smoky aroma of the BBQ kind of entrances you and takes you back to "another time and another place". This is a classic American, small town, no frills, but incredible BBQ joint! It'll be filled with locals who all know each other most likely, but are friendly and will chat it up with you just like you belong. The ribs are incredible - best in the KC area hands down. Strange as it may seem, one of the other best items on the menu is the bacon club sandwich. I think they smoke and slice their own bacon (I could be wrong - but I'm going with it). They also have the best fried pickles around. It's really not that far out of the way. Wellsville is just off of I-35 between Gardner and Ottawa.

I need to stop - I'm making myself hungry! :-)

Re: “BEST BAKED BEANS

Agree with Greg. LC's does have great baked beans. Best baked beans though, hands down, go to Porky's Blazin' BBQ south of Grain Valley. They have a delicious smoky flavor and have big chunks of brisket in them.

Re: “BEST PULLED PORK

This is some of the best BBQ in all of Kansas City. IMHO, the only one better is Porky's Blazin' BBQ south of Grain Valley on Buckner-Tarsney Rd. Nobody in KC has better BBQ that Porky's. Their pulled pork is incredible! (but so is everything else there) It's only open Fri, Sat, and Sun, and you better get there early. Seriously. They might just run out of whatever meat you are wanting.

That said, I love me some Oklahoma Joe's BBQ!

Re: “BEST BOTTLED SAUCE

Seriously? A vinegar-based sauce got "best of" in Kansas City? Yuck!

Re: “BEST CHEESECAKE

Awe this makes me sad that you are targeting an artist who is proud of his product for defending the attacks on here. Other comments are so defensive and all the Chef wants to do is bake some more cheesecake! The person who uses the word "retarded" in their comment is the one who needs to be blocked. I'll be glad to judge a side by side cheesecake competition!

Re: “BEST CHEESECAKE

Hey Scott, thanks for your reply, it is not the readers poll that I am concerned about, it is the way you choose the "critic's" choice. And you will block me if I make another "disparaging comment"! I guess your publication doesn't care about my 1st Amendment Right's. That my friend is funny!

Re: “BEST BURNT ENDS

Your information about burnt ends is inaccurate. You cannot have burnt ends made out of ham, pork, or sausage. Burnt ends must come from a brisket. Anyone who knows anything about Kansas City barbeque knows this. Therefore, LC's has the best burnt ends.

Re: “BEST BAKED BEANS

Really.......did you guys even try the beans at LC's ?

Posted by Greg Hoppe on 10/18/2013 at 8:45 AM

Re: “BEST FRIES

I couldn't agree more. LC's uses FRESH CUT potatoes and fries them in lard the old fashioned way. Just about every other barbeque joint uses frozen potatoes and fries them in vegetable oil. The difference is in the taste.

Re: “BEST PAIN-IN-THE-ASS RESTAURANT

Am I the only one who really likes the decor? I liked it even more when Pete explained the history and metaphor behind it. Next time you go in you should ask him about it

Re: “BEST TECH EXPERT

I worked with Ramsey for a few years at DEG, and he is not a laughing stock. Not even close. He's done great work, and he's one of the people that leave a lot of positivity and friends in his wake. Maybe he's too positive? More than me, definitely, but I don't think he deserves that shot. He's put a lot of work to put himself in the position he enjoys, so good for him.
