Re: “Should the Star be using words like 'thug'?

Seriously.......the term "Thug" originated back in the 1400's and was used as another description for a criminal. Can there not be white, hispanic or asian thugs? Does Hudnall think it would also be inappropriate for a black reporter to avoid using the term thug if they are writing a story that takes place in a predominantly white neighborhood? Enough with the stupid double standards and trying to impose yet a new politically correct term.

Re: “Should the Star be using words like 'thug'?

Racism-oriented folks will percieve 'thug' as an inflammatory term.

The rest of us wont.

Re: “Should the Star be using words like 'thug'?

Jack thinks racism is just an excuse used by black people to cover up their natural inferiority.

I bought their Viva Mango the other day, IT says no artificial flavors , no preservatives, no artificial colors, yet, UNDER THE INGREDIENTS IT SAYS SUCRALOSE, YELLOW#5,YELLOW#6. Any ingredient with a number attached to it is not natural by any means.

Re: “El Burrito Loco listens to Pitch readers, changes Cubano sandwich

Wow! I'll try again. I grew up in Tampa, so I know a Cuban when I see one. I don't expect actual Cuban bread in KC but I can get over that. Effort appreciated!

Re: “Should the Star be using words like 'thug'?

As long as there is the NAACP, Al Sharpton, Jessie Jackson and all the other fools who play the race card, there will always be racism. Thug is an appropriate word, though the "N-word" (god forbid I say it or imply it) is a more appropriate word to describe a young black male who robs a 14 girl at knife point. There is no better definition of the word. If blacks don't want to be thought of as N*****S then STOP ACTING LIKE IT! Stereotypes exist for a reason. If blacks would stop acting like "thugs" everything would be fine. BUT, it seems KC embraces this sort of behavior.
Get a clue people - racism stops when we make it stop.

Don't talk bad about The Pitch or they will ban you. That's their idea of tolerance & fairness.

Re: “Here are some cats explaining how screwed-up payday loan laws are in Missouri

We should insist more that the borrower be accountable for their role in these loans. That is the approach that makes the most sense, and is most fair. Portraying them as victims and writing rules as such has the untended consequence of absolving the borrower of any responsibility whatsoever. That lack of responsibility, of paying loans back on time, and of understanding the terms of a loan is what gets these borrowers in trouble and limits their credit options to payday loans.

Re: “That new new Westport: A party district grows up

Having worked at both the Beaumont club and America's pub in the late 90's right up to 2,000, I can tell you that Pub actually had many less fights inside on a given weekend then we did at the Beumont club, and the bouncer staff was trained with almost army efficiency ( by ex army officers) to break up the fights and get them outside. Once a month they ran scenarios and trained on how to get to a fight, break it up and get it out the door as fast and safely as possible. The management mostly came in to Pub after experience in the other larger clubs were always on the lookout for the known troublemakers and mostly kept them out. They instituted a no rap policy, required shirts to be tucked in, and banned watch caps, baggy pants and most other things that tended to bring in a thug crowd. I can tell you that there were many other clubs that came through during that time, Thirsy's, fallout, etc. that had more violence, and also a culture of hard drugs.
There was a lot of violence in the area, and because Beaumont and America's pub were beside the two largest parking areas in westport, a lot of the violence centered there. I get a little angry at the race issue discussed here. We had as many drunk girls fighting, and as many drunk jocks and frat boys starting problems as African Americans. One of the owners of Pub once told us in a meeting " We want no trash of any race, creed, color, age or religious affiliation in here, and we are going to do everything in our power to keep them out. In my 4 years there, they did their best to do that.

Re: “Johnson County's Ed Peterson wants to unseat Ed Eilert

Dear Robert Roberge, Jr.,

Political capital is a commodity. Most people don't give a damn about the issues because the issues really aren't that important. It explains voter apathy and low voter turnout. Leave community activism to the politicians. It's why they exist. They tend to create the disturbance they want to run against, and then somehow win the election fighting paper tigers. Secondly, there is nothing wrong about raising awareness. However, if you want to do that, try becoming a true journalist and fight against the abuses of government. Investigate so the rest of us don't have to. Editorialize "with power" and not on some blogger website.

But the idea that people can somehow manufacture passion on storm sewer improvements (etc..) is absurd. I am a civil engineer, and I am aware of the giant need in the KC Metro of new sewers, but that doesn't make it a campaign issue.

As long as the politicians aren't felons, I'm pretty much ok... My general reaction to your comment was probably more one of our current president, President Obama. I get tired of hearing "community activism" as if it is a super noble thing to do. I just think "activism" of that sort is a solution looking for a problem, and it often needlessly costs taxpayers. (Obamacare, etc.)

Re: “Saturday night, Center of the City popped off at Vandals

There are so many other outlets that exist to support music and arts in Kansas City, why do we need a bunch of hipsters telling us what we're not supposed to like. What's wrong with writing about all the work that Mike, Smithey, Thad, Dustin, Yager, amd Matt did to put it together. Write about the bands that loaded all their shit into a van and drove for three plus hours to come play. How about writing about a three day festival that brought all those people together pumping their fists and screaming at the top of their lungs. Everything that needed to be said about COTC can be summed up in two words: Zach Fucking Thompson! We don't need the pitch. It hasn't been relevant for years. We can bring the KC music scene together. We CAN be the the instrument of change. KANSAS CITY, UNITE & WIN!!!!

I never thought the word thug meant anything other than a tough, smart ass, mean person, reguardless of color. We just can't win.

Many thanks to Mr. Davalos for the quick remedy on this sandwich. It's great to see a restaurateur that receptive to updating a recipe.

Jake's dad is right! And who the hell cares? Midtown, south Plaza, UMKC west, north Visitation, 51Main, yadda yadda yadda. Let's wish a locally owned business well and hope they can make it. I imagine if they can last through the apartment construction, they'll be just fine.
