Romance Plus Book Sale
Sweat dripped from his furrowed brow. He had one simple goal: to pleasure her. She had to have him. All of him. We imagine (we hope) that this is how some of the prose reads inside — deep inside — the volumes at today's Romance Plus book sale. Peruse stacks filled with titillating scenarios and lusty, sidelong glances, safely contained in the auditorium of the Lawrence Public Library (707 Vermont, Lawrence, 785-843-3833). "We get so many romance novels in. It's a popular genre," says librarian Ruth DeWitt. If heaving bosoms and throbbing love muscles don't make for your idea of literary bliss, no problem. The sale also includes science fiction, young-adult fiction, and "like new" current general fiction and nonfiction, plus DVDs and audiobooks. The sale starts at 12:30 p.m. and ends at 5:30. What is the final frontier for jam bands that have spent entire careers exploring the "space" inside their own heads? Why, more down-to-earth writing sensibilities, of course. Though Phish made a heavy impression on Moe during the band's formative years in the early '90s, Moe has always worn the mark of the jam-band beast -- i.e., catchiness that rears itself in actual songs. Which is not to say that the band is too polished. Moe just knows how to walk the line between taking things out and reeling 'em in, sliding back-and-forth between albums that are song- and jam-oriented. Moe still hasn't found that perfect balance -- not on record, anyway. But live, you'll find a distinct, seamless blend of improv and structure that'll keep both sides of your brain happy. $21-$24

Metropolitan Lawn & Garden Show and the Kansas City Remodeling Show
Before heading to Lowe's for the weekend's honey-do supplies, get some inspiration on infinite ways to enhance the aesthetics, functionality or value of your personal habitat. The American Royal Center (1701 American Royal Court, 816-221-9800) is the site of the Metropolitan Lawn & Garden Show and the Kansas City Remodeling Show, and the theme is practicality. Yes, the usual top-of-the-line products and elaborate landscaping concepts are still on display — there's a whole series of water gardens, complete with fish, waterfalls and nighttime lighting — but organizer Pat Riha says he has noticed a major DIY trend. "A lot of people with limited budgets still want to improve their homes," he says. Nowadays, people also want lawns that are green in the environmental sense. Water conservation through dryscaping (the use of more drought-resistant native plants instead of finicky exotics), Riha notes, is gaining popularity. Both shows are open today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (The shows began Friday with weekend hours of 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.) Admission costs $10 (and is free for children 12 and younger). For more information, see metrogardenshow.com and kcremodelingshow.com. $10; kids under 12 free
