3rd Friday Art Walk

Third Friday of every month, 5-9 p.m.
@ Englewood Arts and Entertainment District 10916 Winner Road (map)
Independence Independence

3rd Friday Art Walk
Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, apparently had some leftover free time on her hands because she was also the goddess of the arts. On the third Friday of each month, she smiles upon the fair city of Independence as businesses in the Englewood Station Arts District, along four commercial blocks of Winner Road, throw open their doors for a monthly art crawl. So if your appetite for boxed wine and paintings isn't satisfied by the area's First or Second Friday events, here's one more (deity-sanctioned) option. See, for example, works by the artists-in-residence at the Green Dog Gallery (10922 East Winner Road) and the monthly exhibit at the Stonebridge Coffee House and Art Gallery (10914 Winner Road, 816-252-0668). Other participating galleries and businesses include the Winner Road Gallery (10916 East Winner Road, 816-461-1717), the B-Vogue Salon (11100 East Winner Road, 816-833-7770) and the Frick Modern Art Gallery (10918 Winner Road, 816-461-6230). Slideshow Series

Second Wednesday of every month, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
@ Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art 4420 Warwick Blvd. (map)
Kansas City Plaza
,
Art is confusing. Artists are inscrutable and weird, and their works are probably somebody else's business. Does this sound like anyone you know? Does it sound like you? If so, let the Slideshow Series at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art (4420 Warwick) be the equivalent of a Dave Ramsey financial seminar for the bankruptcy of your artistic knowledge. Talented Kansas City artists command the floor on the second Wednesday of each month, illuminating their work and methodology with the same visually aided enhancement implied by the name of the series. From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The talks are free, but call 816-753-5784 to make a reservation.

Benefit Yoga Class
Drew Corrigan typically does his good deeds one massage client or yoga class at a time. But earlier this year, the Australian native felt the urge to help struggling communities far beyond the yoga studios and massage tables of Kansas City. How can a body worker of meager financial means fight global poverty? Starting this month, Corrigan is teaching an all-levels, donations-only yoga class at noon every Sunday at Maya Yoga (215 West 18th Street). All proceeds will benefit the Central Asia Institute, a nonprofit founded by Greg Mortenson (co-author of Three Cups of Tea) that promotes education, particularly for girls, in rural Pakistan and Afghanistan. For more information, see drewcorrigan.com.

It's been said that John Coltrane and Charlie Parker met for the first time at the corner of 18th Street and Vine. If you've neglected your civic duties and have yet to see the American Jazz Museum, it's closed today, but musically inclined types can still bring their instruments for the Blue Monday Jam at the museum's attached nightclub, the Blue Room (1616 East 18th Street, 816-474-8463). This week, sit in with — or sit back with a drink and listen to — tenor saxophonist Matt Otto and vocalist Shay Estes Drink specials include a $4 Blue Room martini and $3 beer, wine and wells. There's no cover on Mondays. The Blue Room opens at 5 p.m., and the jam (open to minors accompanied by adults) starts at 7.

Adult Hockey Night

Mondays, 9:20-10:40 p.m.
@ Line Creek Community Center 5940 N.W. Waukomis Dr. (map)
Kansas City Downtown

Adult Hockey Night
Admit it. You still have visions of settling into a lower-level seat at the Sprint Center, proudly sporting a Kansas City Penguins Sidney Crosby jersey. You can see it now: Crosby retrieves a loose puck at center ice, dodges Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Derian Hatcher and decks the goalie for the game winner. The crowd erupts with a cheer that shatters all the glass of the thoroughly windowed arena.Alas, the Penguins stayed in Pittsburgh. So make your own hockey fun on Monday nights at Line Creek Ice Arena (5940 Northwest Waukomis Drive), where, from 9:20 to 10:40, it's open adult hockey night. Admission costs $12 or is free for anyone willing to play goalie. Pull out the old equipment that you hastily bought in college after your obsession with NHL '94 on Sega Genesis prompted you to get more exercise: the taped-up stick, the shoulder pads with decades-old musk, the skates from the Dorothy Hamill collection. And don't forget your self-described legendary trash talk and a few errant elbows. For more information, call 816-513-0763. Line Creek Ice Arena $12; free for goalies

Friday Farmers Market at Bad Seed

Fridays, 4:30-9 p.m.
@ The Bad Seed 1909 Mcgee St. (map)
Kansas City Downtown

Friday Farmers Market at Bad Seed
The phrase the bad seed has gotten plenty of play in our pop culture (a 1956 cult film, a Metallica song), but young, married organic farmers Brooke Salvaggio and Daniel Heryer created their organic farm and market, BadSeed (1909 McGee, 816-472-0027), as a venue offering fair-trade and whole-food products. Their Friday night farmer's market is typically swamped on First Fridays — it's in the Crossroads — and features a variety of area vendors offering fresh vegetables, fruits, grass-fed beef, eggs, baked goods, flowers, jams, culinary and medicinal herbs, Puddin' Head coffee, Green Dirt Farm cheeses and just about everything else you can imagine. The market runs from 4 to 9 p.m. free admission

Brodioke

Thursdays, Fridays, 9 p.m.
@ Bulldog 1715 Main (map)
Kansas City Downtown

Brodioke
We don't know what's ironic anymore. Irony has become so pervasive that we lose track of when we're being serious and when we're kidding. Maybe we've just started parodying ourselves. Have you seen the ironic mullets? That's a freaking haircut, and whoever gets it has to wear it day in and day out -- don't even try to tell us it's just for kicks. Our sense of irony has become so thorough in its execution that it's undeniably sincere. The oddball karaoke night at the Bulldog, hosted by Be-Non singer Brodie Rush, is a perfect example of this phenomenon. How, you may wonder, could a karaoke night be avant-garde? Because the people who regularly participate aren't using the event as an excuse to get up on stage and pretend to be mass-produced jingle-singing pop stars for a night. Rather, lyrics are regularly distorted for the purpose of mockery, singers dress in funny costumes and participants go hilariously over the top in their imitations of generic rock stars. A surprising number of singers have good voices (and perform with some of Kansas City's least mainstream bands), and costumes tend to be breathtakingly elaborate. The host is personable, approachable and entertaining, offering jokes and encouragement and even -- sometimes -- prizes. Don't let the eccentricity fool you. Brodioke is not about being cool. It's all for fun and fun for all -- and we're not kidding.

Insight Meditation with Susan Rico-Presnell
Buddhists refer to insight meditation — which attempts to put the practitioner in a clear, stable and judgment-free state — as Vipassana. It starts with a focus on breath and is said to be effective for increasing mental clarity and enhancing mental well-being. Thanks to the Stone Spirit Lodge (309 Westport Road, 816-561-7900), all of this can be had every Sunday, beginning today, when instructor Susan Rico-Presnell teaches insight meditation. A certified instructor in Buddhist and transformation meditation, she says the practice frees people from disturbing thoughts and feelings. All it takes is $10 and the patience to sit. The class runs from 5 to 6 p.m. See stonespiritlodge.com for more information.
