The Pitch's 2009 pick for Best Karaoke Host
Singing karaoke with Kelly Allen is like being in one of those Finnish disco videos from the '70s on YouTube. Stars descend, a mirror ball comes into focus, bubbles float past alien-ship portholes, backup dancers clad in cheerleading outfits appear, and a man named Hannu with feathered blond hair materializes and proclaims his undying løv. At least, it seems like these things could happen whenever Allen fires up her karaoke machine at the Brick, on the second and fourth Mondays of the month and the first Friday. It helps that her fashions are clearly from a dimension of music and light: She owns the cutting-edge Spool Boutique in the Crossroads District. But even without the glamour, Allen is a down-home gal with a smoky voice who loves a good modern R&B song or '80s hit. And then there are the regulars: Scott, the pop-standards-crooning tattoo artist; David Wayne Reed, who delivers his one-man classic-rock circus; fashion designer and soul slayer Beth Guinta; Matt, the punk-rock bartender; Anna, the opera singer and short-order cook. The list goes on. As the Cars would say: Uh-oh, it's magic.
