The Nelson-Atkins NOW! tour
As a kid, did you ever dream about getting locked inside the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (4525 Oak, 816-751-1278) and having crazy adventures late at night? Well, forget it, Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler — this is real life, and the museum has security guards and motion detectors. Once you put aside your juvenile fantasies about running away, there’s a better — by which we mean legal — way to become acquainted with Kansas City’s world-class art museum: Nelson- Atkins NOW! tours, guided by a team of trained volunteers, beginning at 11:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and at 2:15 p.m. Sunday. Covering the entire museum, from the original 1933 structure through the new Bloch Building, the tours require no reservation. Plus, if you’d like to take volunteer training to become a guide, contact Susan Spencer at sspencer@nels on-atkins.org. free

Those who braved the open house for the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts might tell you that the experience could have been more agreeable. The lines were prohibitively long, and there was rain. But they'll also tell you that the Kauffman Center is something to behold. The glass-walled Brandmeyer Great Hall (the other name for the lobby) is larger than a football field, with Guggenheim-like circular walkways leading up to the balconies of Helzberg Hall and the Muriel Kauffman Theatre. If you skipped out on the grand opening, you haven't missed your chance. The center offers free, small tours (of 15 or fewer people) on Mondays, Tuesdays and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Reservations are required. Call 816-994-7200 or see kauffmancenter.org. free

Cowtown Mallroom
It's been about 40 years since the Cowtown Ballroom, at 3101 Gillham Plaza, hosted the Flying Burrito Brothers, Alice Cooper and Frank Zappa. Today, it's the site of the Cowtown Mallroom, where shoppers and looky-loos alike can find vintage clothing, antiques, records, furniture and art. Vendor liaisons Darrin and Kathi Welch occupy the first-floor space and hope to make it a weekly community event that doesn't necessarily revolve around spending money. "We are working on having nonprofit organizations and food vendors each week," Kathi Welch says. "There is also going to be live music between 2 and 3 p.m." As this blurb went to press, still available were a pack of Hank Williams Jr. playing cards, a black-light Tweety Bird poster and a disco ball. Interested vendors should e-mail cowtownmallroom@gmail.com. The Cowtown Mallroom is open to the public only on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. — Berry Anderson
