Cowtown Mallroom

Sundays, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
@ El Torreon 3101 Gillham Plz. (map)
Kansas City Midtown
,
Cowtown Mallroom
It's been about 40 years since the Cowtown Ballroom, at 3101 Gillham Plaza, hosted the Flying Burrito Brothers, Alice Cooper and Frank Zappa. Today, it's the site of the Cowtown Mallroom, where shoppers and looky-loos alike can find vintage clothing, antiques, records, furniture and art. Vendor liaisons Darrin and Kathi Welch occupy the first-floor space and hope to make it a weekly community event that doesn't necessarily revolve around spending money. "We are working on having nonprofit organizations and food vendors each week," Kathi Welch says. "There is also going to be live music between 2 and 3 p.m." As this blurb went to press, still available were a pack of Hank Williams Jr. playing cards, a black-light Tweety Bird poster and a disco ball. Interested vendors should e-mail cowtownmallroom@gmail.com. The Cowtown Mallroom is open to the public only on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. — Berry Anderson

Saturdays, 9:15 a.m.

KC Pittie Pack walk
To be a part of the KC Pittie Pack, you need neither a pit bull nor pity for those who trail their canines with turd bags. "All dogs are welcome, but we are strict about our rules to ensure everyone and every dog's safety and comfort," says KCPP co-founder (and Pitch contributor) Crystal Wiebe. Rules include one dog per walker, no face-to-face greetings for the dogs, and no retractable leashes. Today's pack walk commences at Penn Valley Park (meet up at the parking lot at 29th Street and Wyandotte), where introductions start at 9:15 a.m. and the walking begins 15 minutes later. "We're not trainers, just animal lovers interested in creating a safe space to socialize our dogs," Wiebe says. For more information, see meetup.com/kcpittiepack. free

Free salsa lessons

Kelly Osbourne was known as a fleshy loudmouth before her Dancing With the Stars debut. But when Ozzy Osbourne's daughter danced the salsa, she transformed into a sultry little thang, prompting judge Bruno Tonioli to declare her "flirty, dirty and sexy." For locals seeking such a makeover — or those simply seeking a new nightlife adventure — the Kansas City Salsa Club offers help with free salsa lessons for beginners at 9 p.m. every Friday at the Marquee Lounge, inside AMC Mainstreet (1400 Main, 816-474-4545). Prior experience of shakin' it to Latin music is not required. "We go easy on salsa virgins," club leader Howard Carney says. The club also has dance lessons five nights a week, but only the Friday lessons at the Marquee are provided free of charge. For more information, see kansascitysalsaclubs.com or call 816-812-1175. free

Eric the Magician at Waldo Pizza

Fourth and Second Thursday of every month, 6-8 p.m.
@ Waldo Pizza 7433 Broadway (map)
Kansas City Waldo
, ,

Professional magician Eric Price, who was shot in the head by a trio of teenagers about six months ago while he was sitting in his parked car at 74th Terrace and Broadway, quickly found that he had a solid support system. "So many KC fans helped me though my ordeal with the fund that Waldo Pizza spearheaded," he says. Back to hiding tennis balls and making balloon teddy bears, Price is seen the first Monday of every month at the Waldo Pizza location in Lee's Summit (1543 Douglas, 816-875-2121). But on every other Monday, he's turning tricks at Waldo's Waldo Pizza (7433 Broadway, 816-363-5242) from 6 to 8 p.m. He has worked at this original location of the family- and beer-drinker-friendly restaurant for the past 11 years. "It's harder with a tube in your eardrum and your ear filling with fluid," he explains. (Half his jaw is numb because it was shattered in the attack.) But he's just as shifty as ever.

Shuttlecarts

Shuttlecarts
The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (4525 Oak, 816-751-1278) sprawls across property once owned by William Rockhill Nelson, who really liked to spread out. Did Nelson grow old and eccentric, exploring his enormous home's interior astride a favorite stallion? The world will never know the answer to that question. We do know that the square footage of the museum's galleries and public spaces constitutes either a daunting physical challenge or a tribute to human imagination, depending on how you look at it. Not everyone is able to explore the entirety of the museum on foot, so the Carter Community Trust has funded two electric carts to shuttle visitors along two routes through the galleries. The museum commissioned Kansas City artist Peregrine Honig to transform the shuttlecarts into rolling works of art. Her "Gilded Cage" and "Sweet Chariot" incorporate visual echoes of carnival rides, Mardi Gras and the vintage coaches of European aristocracy. Y'know, Peregrine stuff. Rides are free. See nelson-atkins.org.

Greater Kansas City Pipe Club

Third Thursday of every month
@ Cigar & Tabac 6898 W. 105th St. (map)
Overland Park South Johnson County
,
Greater Kansas City Pipe Club
One of the traits distinguishing pipe smoking from cigarette smoking is that pipes demand a larger amount of pocket-stuffing contraband -- tampers, pipe cleaners, tobacco pouches, pipes and stuff. Then, before you can light up, you have to do a little project involving pipe-stuffing and an elaborate lighting procedure. And third, it's pretty indisputable that pipe smoking is the single activity most likely to make you resemble Gandalf, or -- more likely -- Pippin, from Middle Earth. This level of commitment really lends itself to clubs of like-minded smoking enthusiasts. At 8 p.m. every third Thursday of the month at Cigar & Tabac, meet and greet other pipe smokers and discuss your common shag-cut interests. Call Mike Sull at 913-362-7864.

Mastery of Conciousness classes
In 1988, Terry Martin had difficulty formulating, much less expressing, her ideas in conversation. She found it too hard to focus on her thoughts. "I wanted to learn how to concentrate better," she says. Martin began taking classes to quiet her mind and understand her own thinking through meditation and intuition development. Today, Martin comfortably speaks in front of others as a teacher and director of the School of Metaphysics (4323 Rainbow Boulevard, Kansas City, Kansas, 913-236-9292), where folks have gone since the mid-1970s to improve the power of their minds — and their lives. Martin helps people listen better, to each other and to themselves. "Think the thoughts that will create the life you want," she urges. What better time to start doing that than the beginning of the year? Whether you want to enhance personal relationships or your tennis game, the weekly, ongoing Mastery of Consciousness classes may help. The first class begins at 7:30 p.m. A $20 donation is requested. For more information, call the school or see som.org. $20

When she was 14, Haleigh Harrold, development manager at the American Jazz Museum, got a Billie Holiday CD for Christmas. "I played that CD before school, after school, doing homework, reading, all the time. The soundtrack to my teen years was Billie Holiday," Harrold recalls. Years later, standing in front of a kiosk in the John H. Baker Jazz Film exhibition space at the American Jazz Museum (1616 East 18th Street, 816-474-8463), she rediscovered the music that inspired her. "I'm not sure why I hadn't thought to YouTube Billie Holiday, but right there at the museum was my first time ever seeing her perform, and I had a really emotional moment watching the singer that introduced me to jazz." Rediscover our city's musical legacy during the AJM's Take Five Tours on the first Thursday and third Tuesday of every month. The free, hourlong tours begin in the Changing Gallery (on display through June 1, Ella: First Lady of Song) and move through the permanent exhibit, the Blue Room and John H. Baker Jazz Film with introductions and meet-and-greets from a handful of the AJM's board members and staff. Afterward, tour participants are invited to attend free performances in the Blue Room. RSVPs are requested via e-mail at takefive@kcjazz.org or by calling 816-474-8463, ext. 238. The tours are limited to 65 people and begin at 6 p.m. free

Those who braved the open house for the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts might tell you that the experience could have been more agreeable. The lines were prohibitively long, and there was rain. But they'll also tell you that the Kauffman Center is something to behold. The glass-walled Brandmeyer Great Hall (the other name for the lobby) is larger than a football field, with Guggenheim-like circular walkways leading up to the balconies of Helzberg Hall and the Muriel Kauffman Theatre. If you skipped out on the grand opening, you haven't missed your chance. The center offers free, small tours (of 15 or fewer people) on Mondays, Tuesdays and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Reservations are required. Call 816-994-7200 or see kauffmancenter.org. free
