Like Faith , a lot of my favorites are determined by geographical proximity. That being said one of my favorites will always be Sakura. It's farther away than I like but it's hard to top the sushi train experience for casual sushi eating.
Sushi Haru on south Stateline is a nice friendly shop with a pan-Asian menu and some nice lunch specials. It was also very close to my old office.
Jworley mentioned Legend of Asia. Be warned if you don't care for buffets. For $12 ($9 for lunch) it is pretty good sushi, never set out too long. Also has above average Chinese buffet and limited Mongolian grill.
Finally my favorite place, a little North of LOA on 7 Highway in Blue Springs is Asian Tiger. It offers Chinese and Korean dishes for non sushi fans, and my Girlfriends kids enjoy the "Karate Kickin" Chicken Nuggets. The tempura bettered and deep fried spicy tuna roll is one of my favorite things in town. The Chef is always experimenting and will make you a custom roll on request.
I cannot say I am surprised by B:2s closing. I work in that area and while I have never been in for lunch, it was always practically empty at dinner time. The one time my brother and I ate there we were the only paying customers in the place.
I hear you Abe. There are places in the KS side (OK Joe's for instance) I haven't been to because they are seriously out of the way for me. I guess we should count ourselves lucky we live in an area with so many GOOD choices.
With a girlfriend whose family lives in Excelsior Springs I have an excuse to be in the area at least monthly.
While it's not my favorite barbecue in town, I HAVE liked everything I have tried there (ribs, smoked meats, chicken, and catfish). If you like fried mushrooms they do it nice, and their onion rings are OK but not Jackstack's.
The decor is what really makes me like the place. It's what Applebees and other "pieces of flair" eateries are trying to be. It's casual and eclectic.
All summer they have live Blues out back at the beer garden, if you don't have any other excuse to head up.
I am really interested in trying it as I am a fan of Templeton Rye. In my (long ago) review of the whiskey I noted it lacked the "aack" factor that you call a wince.
So a beer company I like, using oak barrels from a favorite whiskey company seems like a no brainer. Just thinking I should have grabbed some sooner, Gomer's South was out yesterday.
Well crap, for all the years I have been in KC I assumed the policy WAS no outside goodies.
But all I have ever bothered to sneak in is booze. Usually airplane bottles but a couple times, when sharing, pints.
Re: “Our five favorite pork tenderloin sandwiches in Kansas City”
Kitty's is great. It totally gets my vote from the locations on the list. If you want an old school hand pounded/breaded beast visit PT's just south of I-70 at the Oak Grove exit (my brother tells me that PT''s is owned by the people who USED to run Betty's in Blue Springs).
