Re: “Rapping about KC barbecue ain't nothin' new

If I was from out of town and my friend says, "eat this f*cking rib it's better than anything else in the city." I would say "As you wish, my good sir! Calm down buddy". And after I ate that rib he handed me a rib from a competitor (who I don't have a clue about)saying "now eat this piece of shit."

I WOULD PROBABLY SAY THE FORMER WAS BETTER!...
...just saying.

And folks think OK Joe's is for the Johnson County folks, largely. It used to be KC Masterpiece that was their crown jewel.

Jackstack is the for the folks from both sides that like to eat their ribs with a fork and knife. Largely western Jackson-county folk and Johnson county folk...and Martin City folk (LOL).

Gates is for the hometown folks (FROM KC..the real one) and some out-of-towners.

Bryants is for the Food Network folks, AND hometown folks and a lot of out of towners.

NOW! Jackstack beats all others in consistency as far as tenderness of meat and quality of cook.

Oklahoma Joes has AWESOME french fries! BBQ...wait they make BBQ?

Gates! Great sauce, hit or miss as far as tenderness goes. Sometimes it's a little fatty but I tell you what, right after I type this I'm headed to Gates. I think they just put crack in it.

Oh and by the way, GATES IS NOT JUST BBQ -- it's an experience! Nothing like someone yelling at you.

ALSO! I'm sorry but the smell of their BBQ travelling through the air is absolutely intoxicating.

Author Bryants. AWESOME meats, juicy and tender. Sauce...it's an acquired taste.

Here's how, in reality, it goes (as far as major BBQ joints go):

1. Gates
2. Author Bryants
3. Jack Stack
4. OK Joes.

In closing, I don't really think it's a race thing but it IS probably a geographic thing. I happen to be from KC-proper so I'm die-hard, stone cold Gates although I love Jack Stack. OK Joes is a joke to me (10 on pump 2 please!)

And Mac, I love you, sir! But let us not forget that you went to Shawnee Mission somethin' or other (in reference to my geographic theory)...

My two cents. Fire away!

Re: “Pitch Music Awards voting season has begun

I'm wondering the same thing Amy is. Not to hate but the "Hip-Hop" category is a misnomer. The rap category encompasses the backpackers and gagsta (?) rappers. Simply because Rap is an art-form and Hip-Hop is a culture. Who calls rappers hip-hopers? Maybe your grandfather or something! Rap is a sub-genre of Hip-Hop which includes everything from graffing, turntablism, breaking, etc. Both lists INCLUDE RAPPERS -- regardless of style -- and should both be in the Rap category.

Also, I know that the KC music scene is sort of small, but think about it; over the past few years the very talented folks in the rap / hip-hop all seem to be from the same circles. Some have straight up been the same nominees. Kudos for repetition but maybe Pitch should cast their net a little deeper.

Again, I'm not sure who nominates folks but 1) I and the rest of the readers would probably like to know and 2) We'd like to have a say!

Just saying.

I still love you :). I promise.

Re: “MGMT at the Uptown

One of the worst experiences I've had a show. The crowd was unbearably immature. It was so flipping hot I couldn't even think straight. 5 different kind of swag were omnipresent. Sweaty, stinky children were running in between folks like no one was in the one. Drunk 15 year old girls hugging 25 year old dudes.

The first band was complete garbage. The heat mixed with the dullness of the band almost made me fall asleep...standing up. I'm dead serious. I couldn't believe the band was serious. It seemed as though they were practicing in front of...no one. Idiots were convinced that THEY were MGMT.

This was my first time seeing MGMT. With all the negatives about the atmosphere, the only truly outstanding thing I have to say about their performance is that their lighting was great! Their show, not so much. They had zero stage presence. And although they were better than the warm-up band, they still were up there just playing casually.

To make things even worse, the Uptown's soundman should be shot on site. The vocal mics were fluctuating like the Dow Jones. 3/4 of the time I couldn't hear anything but shattered ambiance. It sounded like I was in the El Torreon.

Boo.

Thank GOD my tickets were free. Best thing all night was my BLVD wheat...which was $10.
