The only thing annoying about this is that he singles out KC as if it is unique in this phenomenon. Now, more than ever, "culture" is centered around about 5 metropolitan areas. KC, STL, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and other similar cities are all about the same in their relevance (or irrelevance) compared to NYC, LA, Chicago, or D.C..
He has said similar things about Boston and other cities. Plus, he lives in NYC. Every other place in the U.S. is going to be shitty to him.
How about an actual old school bakery? Italian deli? Jewish deli? Enough with the trendy stuff. But, still, glad to see a local business move into the neighborhood.
I like Hospital Ships and I support local music but I am not surprised that Vice hate this album. It isn't their style of music. Its way too pretty sounding and sentimental (sometimes I can't take that kind of stuff in high doses). I wouldn't take anything they say too seriously because THEY don't take themselves too seriously. Also, they don't represent Williamsburg, or Greenpoint or any other part of Brooklyn (although I would say that Hospitals ships are more for the "park slope" crowd).
I know this is THE PITCH and you are suppose to be all skeptical and all, but this article really just comes across as typical KC defeatism and self-loathing. "We are not big/smart enough to support a transit system", people say. I call bullshit on anyone who has this belief. The city voted for a MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE and MUCH MORE ADVENTUROUS transit in 2006 (unfortunately it was a bit unrealistic).
This city deserves to have great transit again, and I know THE PITCH wants to spoil the party but the truth is this is the first time in forever that city officials have supported a transit plan on this level.
Re: “Missouri school district bans 'biblically contrary' novels by Kurt Vonnegut and Sarah Ockler”
Springfield embodies what every east coaster probably thinks cities like KC & STL are like. They are incorrect in their assumptions, but with Springfield they have a right to condescend.
