It's a shame that a local alternative paper has to break the news about Southwest to the citizens of KC while its flagship newspaper, the KC Star, ignores it. Guess the Star cant swallow the fact they built up Covington so highly when he started. Good job Pitch!
She should consider relocating to Johnson County. There are 2 prime restaurants available on busy Metcalf Avenue and one Italian restaurant there, I know does over $1 million a year of business. So leave KCMO and come to a place that welcomes business - Johnson County.
Just for the record, it's not just right wing Christians who are out to close down strip bars. Many liberal feminists also hate them. Also as was touched on in the article, the XXX businesses brought this on themselves. WHY, Oh WHY, did they insist on these huge signs with XXX on them on the interstate? They should have seen the eventual backlash. But thats what they get for being in a business that caters to depravity.
I just want to thank you Pitch editors for being brave enough to actually criticize a show. Let me explain: This is something that really grinds my gears. I go to live performances (plays, musicals) about twice a year. Quite frankly, a few of them stink. But at the end of the show the audience, when the actors come out for their final bows, always seems compelled to give them a standing ovation. What? Am I the only one who can see a crappy show? If I had my way I'd walk out and not clap at all but I don't want to look like a jerk. I don't know, maybe it's the fact your seeing the performers eye to eye? Maybe its the fact theatergoers see themselves as an elite clique and don't want to make waves? But, if we are not honest on our feelings about a shows quality, how will the performers learn? And that goes to the papers. Whether it's the Star or Pitch it seems they are reluctant to call a piece of crap play what it really is. Where are the stars ratings for plays like they have for movies? Where are the columns telling people to not waste their money or time?
We are all one city. What happens in Westport, Independence, Olathe, Overland Park, Mission Hills you name the place - it eventually affects the whole city. Jobs, commerce, culture, arts, sports and yes even poverty and crime know no city boundaries and flow everywhere. Its just too bad KC has this state line running down the middle of it splitting us up so people from what side dont think that what happens on the other affects them. Now in the case cited in the article we arent even talking about the whole metro area - just KCMO. Hyde Park pushes out crime but it re-sets up just a few blocks away and can quickly make its way back.
For a good discussion on the issue of if breaking up high concentrations of the poor actually leads to overal lower crime rates I invite you to read an article in the July issue of "The Atlantic" called "Cities and Crime by Stephen Bartenstein. The link is http://www.theatlantic.com/doc.... The article does a good job in analyzing the unintended consequences of trying to relocate and disperse high concentrations of the poor.
Again, solve the problems. Dont just push onto onto someone elses backyard.
Re: “Diocese was warned about priest's 'inappropriate' contact with children”
If we looked back at the archives of The Pitch, there was a case, oh maybe 5-6 years ago, of this man who was a well known pianist and pinao teacher who was also up on charges of posessing child pornography. The difference is how the Pitch and the readers treated the man compared to this priest. People were sympatheitic to the piano teacher, even several students came forward to testify about his character and they said this was just a harmless personal sexual outlet. Please Pitch. Look back in your archives and find this article. Look how that was covered compared to this priest and then decide if their is some bias.
