Re: “Kendrick Williams fatally shot early Sunday in Westport during the Middle of the Map music festival

I'm only speaking because I was there and met the young man as well. He was there encouraging his friends to go after their dreams. Which is needed and admired. People are using this as an opportunity to show how ignorant they are..... showing no taste or class for a fellow HUMAN BEING that lost their life. Where is the compassion? Where is the concern? Where are the suggestions to make the situation better? Where is your humility? It helps nothing to play the blame game or pull race cards. We are all here on earth together taking in the same air and sunshine. The hip hop genre should not be under attack and yes "hood" music is different yet it is grouped together. The lyrics that you reference are representation of the reality that some have to live. The lyrics I heard were uplifting and hopeful that night. People talking about their experience and trying to enjoy life. The real issues are ones that know one wants to talk about. Much of real authentic hip hop music is used as a tool to teach, empower, and uplift. It's not intelligent to generalize and condemn a whole race and it's a two way street. Why don't you try reaching out with solutions instead of hiding behind your screen and criticizing. Whats going stems to problems and situations before and beyond hip hop. People who speak as if they are powerful...why don't you do something useful with that energy instead of what is being displayed here. There is a reason for the negativity you hear in some of the music. Ex...Songs talk about not giving a f*ck because that's what is witnessed and experienced. We treat people how we are treated. Hurt people hurt people and you don't help by doing and saying things that hurt more. Everyone is responsible for whats happening. The media bombards a steady stream of negativity. Its not hard to have the perception of a dark hopeless reality with that. Why is the camera not pointed at the positive that is happening? Whats the deal with the school system....why are the funds not making to the classrooms? There's plenty of conscious positive empowering music out there. Why is that not in rotation? Why are so many liquor stores condensed in these areas? How come grocery stores are allowed to sell crap toxic food? People who served time in prison are stamped with felon making it hard for them to navigate legally because they get turned away from jobs. How is that rehabilitation? People should be ashamed of being flat out racists and disrespectful on a thread that's about someone losing their life. Try channeling that energy into something more productive or just stay out of it completely. The problems that we are facing in this world cut across all racial lines. Violence is not exclusive to black people. If you attack hip hop then you need to attack them film industry, the medical industry, the war industry, the food industry, etc. Music and art is all some of these kids have. We al should be applauding their hope and will to keep pushing through regardless of the circumstance! Next time try saying something that will be edifying or just stay out of it......
