Akin was wrong and commenter Jack defending him is not helping. Being a right-wing, Christian conservative myself, I am most impressed with the post of Andrew. He does not use conjecture or bile (as many on both sides do), he uses an empircal study. If research suggests that Akin was wrong (and it seems he was wrong to a great degree), then he was wrong regarding the factual content. He was also wrong to use the word legitimate. Even if a rape claim is proven to be false, that does nothing to delegitimize any claim since the act itself is horrific. However, I agree with Akin's final statement. The child should not be held responsible for the act, and that is what abortion in this case is doing. Therefore, I disagree with Romney/Ryan for making the statement they did. Akin's stupidity had nothing to do with his beliefs about abortion (which many men AND women share), but about his statements regarding rape.
It is interesting that being a Christian is coupled with a necessary dis-belief in science. I, as a Christian, have always also loved scientific inquiry for its logic and ability to discover truth. That said, it is an ignorant statement to say that because I am a Christian I have to disavow science. My children do not attend public school; not because they teach science (all of which they also teach in Christian schools--including the part about the pseudoscientific "Big Bang"), but because my children could also be subjected to teaching about lifestyls I believe are harmful. As a parent, it is my job to nuture and protect my children, and I do so by keeping them from harmful situations. The Ammendment 2 question is about openness for all religions, not just Christians, and I support that. Even if I believe that someone is misguided in their belief, I will support their rights. Unfortunately, some of the commenters do not seem to share that opinion.
Re: “The Chiefs took a gut punch in their home opener”
Wow, really poorly written article. But, that is on par for this particular rag. Any team missing five starters from their defense and a premier backup in the secondary is going to struggle against a loaded offense. The real problems for the offense occurred when Succoup missed a field goal and then the offense started pressing. If the Chiefs had their startin offense in for the game, it would probably have been very different. So, to sum up, when writing an article try to be objective and look at the whole picture not just the bits that will make it a more sensational piece.
