Re: “Never-occupied Merriam Village is razed to make way for IKEA”
I worked in Merriam Village for two years with Spirit Halloween inside of the almost-finished Circuit City. The building was filled with their new "The City" concept store signage, fixtures, and a fully wired alarm system. The center was never completely empty, and the "lifestyle center" did actually attract various people including dogwalkers, rollerbladers, luxury car test drivers, and joggers.
That Circuit City did pose a direct threat to the OfficeMax across the street in the Merriam Town Center. The City had built a mobile audio installation bay, a soundproofed home theater listening room, and firedog tech support into the Merriam Village location.
The store could have been a major electronics destination for Northern Johnson County, though the Merriam OfficeMax location has continued to perform well over the past few years.
