Re: “Annette Betancourt convicted of running a cat house”
In short: This is ridiculous and horrible--an indication that we are still uncivilized animals ourselves. Further: Don't we care about animals that have no one to take care of them and generally don't have the experiences in life to know how to take care of themselves. After all, ferals cats are pets that were either abandoned or lost and left to defend for themselves--or they are the descendants of these pets. Should our pets or pet's defendants, just be left to fend for themselves or die? There is no place for feral cats besides living outdoors. They are not adoptable and shelters will not care for them. If feral cats are taken to a shelter, they are almost invariably euthanized. So what do we do with feral cats? Killing them has not been found to be helpful with population control. There is no other viable option besides TNR for population control. Besides feeding the cats for humane reasons, food has to be put in the traps to catch feral cats and then do we just release cats who have just have surgery out to defend for themselves? Spaying is major surgery and takes months to fully heal from. If you had just had a hysterectomy, would you want to be out on the streets trying to survive? Are we animals or are we humane enough to care about helpless cats?
