Re: “Great Mall of the Great Plains will close later this year

I don't understand why the existing structure needs to go. I know that it's barely 20 years old, so it seems silly to consider it as historic preservation, but you have a long term vision. When you compare the success of Prairiefire to the Mission Gateway crater, one has to wonder why we can't get more creative with opportunities that vacant malls provide. If the surrounding surface parking were developed into dense residential units, park space, and a bus station, I believe there would be new commercial interest in the space at the Great Mall. To be able to provide a grocery store, a fitness center, medical or University offices, or even a warehouse club within walking distance of 1,000-3,000 residents seems like the perfect investment opportunity and an excellent way to transform the way new generations and retirees view housing and transportation.

The midwest is the best place to raise a child. What I'm trying to say is: "Don't go anywhere, Steve."

Re: “Save Westport? Assessing the neighborhood’s recent parking-lot controversy

This is not simply a case of ugly asphalt that promotes car culture being converted into vibrant, urban space. What do hipsters hate worse? McDonald's or surface parking? It's an enigma.

There's a war being waged on surface parking right now, and while I'm always happy to see new development, it's not like this parking lot was simply being used for parking. In the past, it has been fenced off to host events; occasionally a stage has been erected. I'm thinking of Middle of The Map and St. Patrick's Day.

And while I encourage anyone who is headed to Westport for a night of drinking to consider a taxi or ride sharing service, parking spaces can come in handy during a lunch hour. Long term business owners in Westport have every right to be upset with this development because it will create more competition, hide their storefronts, reduce event space, chase away food trucks, etc.

Gentrification is slowly converting the urban core into a denser imitation of the suburbs.

Re: “At last, Boulevard Brewing Co. plans to start offering select beer in cans

I've heard McDonald reject the idea of canning his beer on at least one occasion, and it seems that I've read that, too. I'm glad to see he's changed his mind. Or maybe InBev changed it for him. Floating the North Fork of The White River is going to be much tastier this summer.

Re: “Brookridge development hopeful Chris Curtin at least hired the right consultant

I'm concerned that we're oversaturating our region with office space and competing venues at the tax payers' expense. Rather than invest in new real estate developments that may or may not pan out, it seems to me that our region should join forces across state lines and begin to aggressively bring established corporations and jobs to KC. Relocating employees to the midwest is a modest investment and people's jaws will hit the floor when they see the real estate deals they can get here.

This is a very short sighted, greedy project, imo.
