<![CDATA[My sister's father in law goes bat-shit crazy if plates are removed before everyone's finished (actually, he's generally unpleasant at restaurants—picky orderer, condescending to servers, lousy tipper). I get anxious if my plate stays much after I'm finished.

<![CDATA[My preference would be as soon as I appear finished-even if food remains. I am usually first to finish but talk with my hands and enjoy my conversation more if there is no chance of me flinging food at fellow diners (not that that would happen mind you) Also, I think it's up to me to assure my dining companions that there is no rush for them to compete for second place finish.

<![CDATA[No one is telling your fellow diners to hurry up and no one is rushing them by removing your plate. The server is simply trying to accomodate your comfort by giving you the option of having your plate removed.

<![CDATA[I like my plate cleared as soon as I am finished just to get it out of the way. While the first to finish eating, I'm generally the one holding up the party from leaving as I finish my drink, so I can't imagine anyone feels rushed.
