And more innocent victims are claimed by the violence all the time: Nelson Hopkins Jr; Brian Euston; Tony Singh; and countless more.
There should not be "a wrong place at the wrong time", whether it's on the Rockhurst campus, Westport, at work in a convenience store, or anywhere else.
But as we mourn, we also must demand change so that fewer families will have the pain and loss of the almost 100 families of murder victims already this year. Doing something ourselves and demanding more of officials and leaders is the greatest legacy we can leave to lost loved ones.
After the mourning, there needs to be much greater resolve and vigorous actions with results to curb the violence and take back neighborhoods from the small minority of thugs which terrorize the community.
I personally mourn with the families and we need you going forward.

But as long as community leaders and public officials DON'T EVEN TRY to address the core issues of this cancer, things can only get worse.
Of all the issues facing KCMO in the upcoming elections, none has a greater impact on the liveabilty, economic vitality, and long-term success of the city. The public needs to demand that this issue be addressed, thoroughly debated, and solutions offered by the mayoral candidates during the campaign.
Is it ok that every week of the year at least two residents are murdered in KCMO?
And if the answer is NO, what are YOU going to do about it?
That would be a good start!
