      <![CDATA[This whole affair confirmed my long-standing belief that preachy insufferable vegetarians should be avoided at all costs. I am surprised they haven't started knocking on people's doors like Mormons, with pictures of dead chicken and bloody cows.<br>
And Amber, you only "sort-of" eviscerated the guy in your own mind.Instead you helped making his article the most read on the NYT website.

Most non-American Buddhist monks I've spoken to have little problem eating meat... matter of fact, the ones hailing from the Himalayas (Tibet, Nepal, etc) insisted on a high-beef diet. And the fact remains that the Buddha himself never prescribed a veg-only diet nor forbade eating meat.

      <![CDATA[I hear very shallow generalizations and the names of more enlightened coast cities being dropped, but what would constitute a "cultural shift" that would satisfy the palates of people who can't find anything beyond Chinese or watery pasta in a food town like Kansas City? This IS the midwest, but chefs here are just as interested in making a living as their peers in San Francisco or NYC, and as the market demands it they'll continue to expand their offerings.

      <![CDATA[The only relevant thing that A.G. says in his essay, that speaks directly to Bender's point, is this: "And finally, it is important to not forget that hunger is the price a picky eater must be willing to pay without becoming insufferable." When you choose to eat differently from others, you must recognize that is your choice, and your responsibility to explain, to have patience around, to understand and to forgive and finally to figure out the work-arounds.
