Speaking as someone who does live in KC, I'm getting increasingly frustrated at the total lack of anything even vaguely approximating actual information on this project coming from Google.

This Pitch article is dated May 1st 2012.

This article I link
http://gigaom.com/broadband/has-google-cha…
is from May 25th.

It's starting to look like there may be no Google fiber to the home. That'd be very sad.

Speaking as someone who may never live in KC, I am delighted that Google chose a mid-western, "normal" location for their Gigabit Fiber living laboratory. I happen to live within 8 miles of the intergalactic GooglePlex but will never have home access to a Google-constructed fiber (or wireless) plant.

I realize that the media must continue to write the "Google bites Man" features to drive readership but I really do believe that Google invested in this community-wide Gig Fiber deployment to understand (and then monetize) what can be done when a community has virtually unlimited Internet access (excepting South Korea.)

@Ted Wireless may be the coin of the realm, but except for Mountain View (with home town GoogleWiFi access) and most of Santa Clara, there is no free-to-access, ubiquitous Wi-Fi here in the Silicon Valley. And none of it could be considered high speed.
