You have misinformation. Citizens United v. FEC started out to be about the "time" restriction of when Citizens United (a 501c4) could not run "Hilary: The Movie" or ads for it, but that's only where Citizens United v. FEC began.

The decision actually gave corporations and unions the freedom to spend unlimited amounts of money campaigning for or against candidates or issues in elections.

By the way, corporate contributions to individuals seeking national office still remain illegal both before and after the Citizens United ruling.

The holding in the case was as follows: "A provision of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act prohibiting unions, corporations and not-for-profit organizations from broadcasting electioneering communications within 60 days of a general election or 30 days of a primary election violates the free speech clause of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution."

Citizens United was really about the "Time" restriction in the reasonable time, place, manner restrictions that are permitted to be put on political speech. It seems unreasonable that their speech should be any less allowable closer to an election.
