A Bit British

Sally Helm, proprietor of Brits, an import shop in downtown Lawrence (929 Massachusetts, 785-843-2288), has always wanted to mount a big event to celebrate the culture and foods of the United Kingdom. But she decided to start small. Helm's first Mini British Faire takes place today, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., behind her shop and — think small here — gives visitors a chance to rub elbows with a tea vendor, members of the Lawrence Rugby Club and the Lawrence British Car Club. Visitors also may purchase baked goods from the Daughters of the British Empire and listen to Maria and Megan perform Celtic music. "We're having a ginger-beer tasting all day long," Helm says. That's nonalcoholic, by the way. Other vendors will sell books, scones and homemade bread. "We may offer free samples, too," Helm adds. "We've got a lot of ginger preserves around here." Wash it down with a swig of ginger beer, and you'll be ready to sing "God Save the Queen" and kick a rugby ball. For more information about Helm's store, see britsusa.com.
