Located in an abandoned barbed-wire factory on the banks of the Kansas River, Abe and Jake's is the most cavernous venue in Lawrence. Originally conceived as a multi-purpose retail and entertainment mecca, it's now mostly a special event space-for-hire, open to the public only on Thursdays and Fridays during the school year. But when it's up and running, this massive warehouse filled with eclectic sculptures and multiple saloon-style bars is unlike anything else in town. The crowd on Thursdays and Fridays consists predominantly of KU students of the 18-and-over variety, who dance to very loud pop and hip-hop music. The bar also offers occasional live music, and it's a great place for a raucous wedding reception.
