Against Me

Monday, March 21, at El Torreon.

Punctuation is a funny thing. Parentheses are jolly. Apostrophes are hysterical. Semicolons make me wet myself. And don't even get me started on ampersands. But the wacky little exclamation point that Against Me bills itself with (Against Me!) is as revealing as it is amusing. You see, these Florida punks like their anarchism with a little absurdity. And the exclamation point serves to remind the world that the guys in Against Me are serious about serious things -- politics, injustice, politics -- without taking themselves too seriously. Songs such as "Cliché Guevara" and "Turn Those Clapping Hands Into Angry Balled Fists" are delivered with a wry smile, even as the band lands sonic punches to the gut and lyrical uppercuts to the brain. If you can't laugh and pump your fist to "You Look Like I Need a Drink," you have no soul. And if you can't cheer as Against Me destroys the sound barrier -- and its equipment -- onstage or laugh when drummer Warren Oakes streaks naked through a tourmate's set, you, my friend, are an asterisk.
