Zorba the Greek, the 1946 novel by Nikos Kazantzakis, tells the tale of a young intellectual who joins forces with the unrestrained and joyful Alexis Zorba. Armed with gifts from the gods — a sword, a shield, and a helmet that makes its wearer invisible — they capture the winged stallion Pegasus, travel to the rich city of Joppa and defeat the Kraken. Wait ... different story? Anyway, Greece is now a bustling nation and the chief exporter of kalamata olives. Celebrate the country's rich heritage and culture at the Greek Festival from 11 a.m until 8 p.m. at St. Dionysios Orthodox Church (8100 West 95th Street, in Overland Park, 913-341-7373). This annual festivus includes food, drink, dance and music. A pop-up Greek Marketplace offers traditional items such as worry beads, embroidered clothing, artwork and many other gift items.
