Art Love Child

If love can give birth to children, it can also produce good art. Such is the premise behind Cohabitation at the Green Door Gallery (1229 1/2 Union Avenue). The show, on view from 1 to 5 p.m., ends today. Cohabitation is the combined effort of installation artists Lauren Winnen and Joe Devine, a married couple who have kept separate professional lives until now. Winnen uses industrial materials such as aluminum, as well as softer, more feminine objects and shapes made of cloth and plush toy material. Devine often uses found objects. His mixed-media “Simulandscape” contains a toy solider, a gun, a plastic flamingo and various other objects, all bathed in black paint. Both artists also create two-dimensional collages. Each end of the U-shaped Green Door holds works by one of the artists. As one progresses to the underbelly of the U, the power that each spouse exerts on the work of the other becomes clearer. “The creative processes influence each other,” says Hector Casanova, a director of the gallery.
