Art That Pops

Kansas autumns: cool breezes, auburn leaves and the annual migration of 25,000 Neanderthals — er, college students — into Lawrence proper. This spawns a spike in hazings, keggers and roofied cocktails. But the migration also includes some of the artists that sculpt Lawrence into a cultural Eden of the plains. Support the scene by strolling in the sixth Red Balloon To-Do. Clustered around downtown Lawrence's Massachusetts Street, the art walk features red balloons and plenty of artists looking for green. This year's venues include Wonder Fair, 6 Gallery (716 Massachusetts), Astrokitty Comics (15 East Seventh Street), Solidarity Revolutionary Center (1109 Massachusetts) and The Granada (1020 Massachusetts). Viewings are free and open from 5 to 9 p.m. An afterparty follows at The Granada with music by Coat Party, Boo and Boo Too, and noise troubadours Ad Astra Per Aspera. Tickets to the all-ages show cost $7. For more information, see redballoo.ning.com.
Sat., Sept. 6, 5-9 p.m., 2008
