The star's the limit for this artist.

Kansas City native Molly Magdalain seems to have her hands in just about everything. She's a singer-songwriter who lives here as well as in Nashville, where she's pursuing her recording career. In college, she studied art, and her photographs and paintings are on display this month at the Yoga Gallery (5615 Johnson Drive in Mission). She's also interested in shamanism and jin shin jyutsu. The latter might be giving her the power to become a successful jewelry designer. Her baubles include semiprecious gemstones threaded along instrument strings used by artists such as Elvis Presley, Alison Krauss and Union Station, and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. She also sells less expensive pieces (read: from less famous musicians).

Now she's moving to New York City to open a retail shop for her company, StarStrings. "I think it will really allow me to take this company to national and international levels," Magdalain says of her relocation to the arty Soho-Nolita district. "I'm hoping to do a lot of work with celebrities and artists in the urban community."

StarStrings has a retail space at 5306 Martway in Mission that's open by appointment only, or you can check out the designs at www.starstrings.com. Magdalain's send-off party is 8 p.m. Friday at the Yoga Gallery; call 913-208-2274 for more information. -- Annie Fischer

Let the bidding begin.

The Hope House, a shelter for victims of domestic violence, hosts its first-ever auction at 9 a.m. Saturday at Maywood Auction House (10112 East Truman Road in Independence). It's a chance to score antiques, appliances, tools, furniture and other goodies; you can also get some grub in exchange for a donation or enter the $2 raffle. And if you're feeling really wicked, consider donating merchandise to be auctioned; the Hope House accepts contributions until Friday. Call the auction house at 816-836-2294 for more information. -- Fischer
