Best Actor/Actress

Lynn King

"I been a drifter all my life," Lynn King said as the Unicorn's Bee-Luther-Hatchee opened last May -- and audiences were instantly hooked by her mammoth stage presence. King played a woman at two stages in her life: a senior citizen rich with stories about what it means to be a black female in America; and her younger self, a bold, subtly sexual being too focused on matters of the heart to care what people thought about her white lover. Her work was wonderfully modulated and sharply etched. It was the first of two strong performances from King this year -- the other in Nothing Comes to Sleepers -- solidifying the notion that she can do just about anything put before her. Of late, there's nothing false or actressy about her work; she's living in her characters' skins, and audiences are reaping the benefits.

I've been a great admirer of yours for several years. I was at the performance of A House With No Walls on Sat 1/26 and loved what you did with the role. (You have a wonderful ability to look into each member of the audience when you're taking your stage bows as if to say "thank you".) but I did get absorbed in your recent performance of Intimate Apparel. Looking through your credits at the Unicorn, I think I've seen them all and I'm always saying to my daughter and son-in-law (we're season ticket holders), "damn, she's so good". My own daughter (Valerie Fagan) performed years ago in "Six Women With Brain Death" at the Unicorn - it helped start her career - she's now in NYC still hoping for the big Broadway break. Anyway Lynn, (both my sister's and her daughter's name) , keep up the great work and I'm looking forward to seeing you for many years to come.
